A Way of Life

A Way of Life

The country is bankrupt
Due to greed and corruption
Bankers sit on credit
As my retirement goes up in smoke
And my 401k becomes 001k.

The economy slowly collapses
Jobs are lost and pensions disappear
Swindlers get golden parachutes
Poor get the shaft
As the nation continues to fall.

Pass the buck shift the blame
Blame the poor working class
The wealthy live in prosperity
The middle class lose their homes
While huge bailouts go to the rich

Demise is before me
As cutbacks are taking shape
And payouts lined pockets
Man controls man to his injury
As the world we know plummets

amen

I have to admit i've been buying more canned food. There is one small happiness I have in this. I hated seeing the goons on wall street line up and clap every morning for the news broadcast, it was such a slap on a smile robotic clap. I don't think they have much to clap about anymore, all the arrows point down on the dow jones. 'golden parachute' loved that.

Government ...

by the business elite. They couldn't do it without our acquiescence. After all, we voted them in. Can we learn from our mistake(s)? A futile wish, it seems. We need more attention paid to this subject on this site. Poetry's such a good messenger/bellwether. Thanx for the aptly frank expression, Chuck

Chuck

Don't know what good messenger/bellwether is. Acquiescence was not I, no matter who you vote for ALL the issues won't be solve I welcome your honest opinion. Just feeling the stress and putting in poetry what I see is happening and what it is doing to me from my perspective. Respectfully Yours, Barbara

You deny you own power, Barbara,

surely no elected official can fix everything, but you can bet your ass Republicans will fix things for themselves, the extreme rich, Democrats only slightly less so, and Greens for a sustainable future. Don't laugh, all it takes is votes. Already Greens hold the balance of power in the Senate in Australia, they dominate local government (to the betterment of local government) and are getting recognised world wide. Not as fanatics, but as intelligent ideas for a sustainable future. cheers, Jess

The Power

My faith comes from a higher source. The power is what God allows man to have while they try their hand at governing themselves. Not every one will receive equal justice or mercy there are road block and stumbling stones in the way of the poor that keep them from prosperity that the rich enjoy. Happy you shared your take on this. I see now from your comment what you have put your faith. We differ, but I appreciate knowing your views. Respectfully Yours, Barbara

An accurate commentary on

An accurate commentary on the present state of the western world. You hit hard and I applaud the message this very well written poem carries. Kaz It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

Sadly, my mother was right

Sadly, my mother was right about a lot of things... She (as was I) emigrated to the US. Often she would say she would not live long enough but I will.... the middle class will be going going gone. Pretty much true at the moment. Yet the idiots in power have no clue that the middle class is/are the numbers... with *buying power* to turn the economy around. Big business falters when the majority of folks have no buying power. Nor can consumer-driven capitalism survive another war... ~A

Barbara,

this is good piece for conversation, I like it. I like the way you use the line out of the Bible "Man controls man to his injury" Very nicely done! Thanks, Eddie

Even though our country is in dire straights, and this is no joking matter, I couldn't help but chuckle at your line about the 401k becoming a 001k. All I'm hoping for now, is that in the early spring the market will start to come back up consistantly. (I say spring, because that's when my two CDs come due, and the money is freed up) I REALLY would love to catch that wave of the market rebounding, as I'd be buying low, and it would be gaining value. Not all is lost. I was lucky enough to have everything split between CDs, so it's locked in. I feel horrible for others, though. Jon's 410k literally tanked about 18k so far - but, he's able to buy, buy, buy - and when the market returns he'll make out like a bandit. My advice, unless the stock is going to fold - stay in it, and buy it. If it's something major, like a pharmaceutical, or say Walmart or something like that, KEEP IT! Yes, you're losing some now, because it's losing its value - buy low, sell high. It's counter-intuitive, but it's correct. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"It is better to be thought of a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt..." - Mark Twain

This is more of a debate than a poem here's my 2 cents

My 140k became 0k 3 years ago. It changed my life. Simple things became my pleasure I do not think any one should have been bailed out. I think the fat cats should have taken a hit to their salaries. Our government is out of control bailing out The rich. Drug companies, insurance companies who have to be sued to get them to pay and the stock market is a RISK that people take. Duhh. I was hoping the rich could take the fall and eat peanut butter and jelly like the rest of us in Michigan. China now owns us. Maybe people who went broke would learn what is really important. Family, being able to sleep at night and Love of your fellow man. Oh and as Jan said neo poet.

Right you are Patty

My 401 just became almost 0 and I don't believe in bailouts either. Let them sink of swim on their own. The only problem I see is it doesn't effect just them but all the people working for them too *sigh*. No President did this. It was caused by the house and senate catering to special interest groups lobbying for them to make loans available for people who ordinarily would not be eligible and had no way of paying back what they borrowed. Then cooking the books. Sad that we have to pay for it. I don't blame a president, a democrat or a republican for this, I blame every damn one of the bastards. Pardon me for being so blunt. Rett, I believe you have the best thoughts in the matter.

Each one has to pay out through the nose for those cheats who really pocket the money by their manipulations. Today's shy locks are well educated to walk away with both money heart and blood. Lol Only other rich shark can really do them in by buying low and selling high. Ordinary persons like us will always be fleeced. So it is best to invest in real estate...etc. A bird in hand is better than two in a bush.

Hi Barbara...

love the new picture of yourself, you really do have a beautiful smile... ya know, I live in S.C., now when I'm out in the world I'll be studying every face for yours...lol... your poem has had quite an impact on the people here because it is so easy to relate to... and like Jess said, it has the oooomph. There were a few spots where the correct tense of words were not used, if those were fixed this would be a five star poem for sure... this is a great subject to write about... and because of yours, I suspect to be seeing more.... enjoyed the read of your poem and the most interesting comments to it... Now you will hear about how one of the members in the presidential race got more money than the other, what they won't say is that the average person contributed 86.00 86 dollars from the common folk who are sick of big spending!
