Summertime in Texas

Summertime in Texas

Heat rising off the asphalt
Like waves upon the water
Melts your shoes if you step
Where you shouldn't aughtta

Tenni shoes sizzling hot
Sweat fills them like a cup
Gonna stink bad tonight
When I put them up

Shirt so wet it sticks like glue
So humid you can't breathe
Longing for a cold drink
Or just a cooling breeze

Shorts in my buttcrack
Need pliers to pull them out
And they're so wet anyhow
The sweat could end the drought

Summertime in Texas
Ain't it just so grand
Heading for a meltdown
I'd murder for a fan

Night so hot the crickets
Cannot even sing
Looking at a cloudless sky
Hoping for some rain

Air conditioner working hard
Just cannot beat the heat
Even deep into the night
Too hot for you to sleep

Summertime in Texas
Black gumbo for the ground
Cracks wide as a lake
But no water to be found

Sometimes I want to move up north
For a cooling breeze
But I think of all the snow
And I don't want to freeze

Got the old lady's help
To pull off my jeans
Prickly heat upon my butt
Oh Lord how it stings

Ran a bath of cold water
But it didn't help a bit
One more day in this heat
And I'm gonna have a fit

Summertime in Texas
Y'all just come on down
You don't need a sauna
Just sweat until you drown

Summertime isn't far away, so I thought I'd give y'all a taste of Summer in Texas. *G*

Thank you. Texas is a full flavored state. We have subtropical, rolling hills, plains, mountain country and desert land according to where you are at. Pretty independent folks out here. No state income tax either. I love Texas, but a few of the old boys have a tendency to brag or tell tall tales. *LOL* I wouldn't do that though, my "Great Texas Mosquito Hunt" isn't a tall tale I assure you. *G* I'll re-post it tomorrow since I think it got erased here while back. *LOL* Janice

Now would I exaggerate? Uh, don't answer that! *G* Right now I am sitting around in 78 degree F. weather with the windows open and a nice breeze from the south. I very faint tang of salt water from the gulf wafting in on the breeze. Not bad at all with the ceiling fans going. Brrr, you are right, I would hate Michigan winters. Hard to be a hockey fan down here since we only have three seasons. January, February and Hot. I am a pro football fan. American football, none of that soccer stuff although we have a very good pro soccer team in Houston. Brrr, you make me cold just thinking about it. 78 here right now. Cool breeze. I'm only about 5 or so miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Respectfully, Rett: "A Democracy can withstand anything but Democrats." Robert A. great....

Thanks for the visual on people running around pulling their shorts out their butt. I learned a couple things between visiting family, etc out west... you have one mission: 1) find an AC unit 2) park ass in front of said unit. :~) ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"The truth is, it doesn't matter what you do. You have made me home sick for Ohio, snow or not. It's even harder to be a girl down here. no hairdo, no makeup because of the humidity. And of course I would never admit to a wedgie in any weather. Linda

Now Linda, think of the pluses

You don't have to spend hours on make-up and hairdos. You get to dress skimpily. You get to understand how all those women wearing thongs feel without wearing one. *LOL* One great big plus though is the high humidity helps your skin stay pliable so you look younger longer. (truth) *giggle* Of course, you don't have to deal with snow measured in feet instead of inches and you don't have the fun of driving through blizzards or being confined to your house for days or weeks. Besides, a friend who lived in Ohio told me it didn't snow up there, that it snowed in other states and blew into Ohio sideways. You aughtta - buttcrack!!

Oh what words to make one dance a crazy jig,you should be employed to make a new dictionary Rett, I was made to feel hot and sweating by your poem. Today we had the most perfect day possible, with HOT sunshine and the snow still reflecting cool, what a combination of contrasts and a feeling of pure satisfaction. I do NOT like the heat, in the cold one can clothe oneself and move about to keep warm, in the heat I become lethargic and loose my vitality, although the sand and sea and sun can, on a white beach, with no one else in sight, be very special! Good fun Rett from Ann of Norway

Well now Ann, we usually siesta in the hot part of the day

Because of the lethargy. I'd rather do that than be an ice cube, but it is all a matter of taste and of course, joint ail. I would be in a wheel chair most of the winter. Well, the deserted beach can be fun in the sun but in the evening you have to get the shotguns out to fight off the skeeters. *LOL* Respectfully, Rett: "A Democracy can withstand anything but Democrats." Hi Rett

I had fun reading this--even gave Steve (hubby)a chuckle--and that's saying something, him no particular fan of poetry. The comments were entertaining too. Ohio is tame compared to Wyoming, which just today expects blizzard conditions complete with 55 mph wind. It's enough to blow a big rig right over on its back. I've seen it--it would look like a giant bug on its back, unable to right itself, in the snow, with 18 round rubber legs sticking up in the air. Although I do remember Ohio being a glacier for about 4 months a few years back. Your 78 degrees I could be jealous over. Deelilah

Hi Delilah!

Glad you and even hubby got a giggle out of that. I have seen a few 18 wheelers up on their sides during strong winds so I can imagine what that would do to one. If hubby and you have ever been through south Texas in the summertime, I am sure y'all will appreciate "Great Texas Skeeter Hunt." Brrr, I get chills just thinking about what you said. Been in San Antonio and Houston

in the summer. Yes, it was hot. We took a cab to the River Walk and Alamo in San Antonio. That was high, maybe tied for first, on our list of memorable places. What is the 'skeeter hunt'? Texas is high on favorite states, all parts, although I like the piece between Dallas and Louisiana. Texas wins for the biggest, cleanest, and most interesting rest stops. Illinois is second. Dee P.S. I see you changed your picture back in the last few minutes. I like this picture. It's really you, isn't it?

Well Deelilah

Skeeter is short for Mosquito and there are some tales that some unsavory characters prone to exaggeration tends to spread about the Skeeters in Texas, being large. Not me, I don't rightly know if they're that large, I'm pretty sure that the ones down along the Amazon might be rather large. The ones here in Texas are most likely about medium. *G* The River Walk in San Antonio is really a nice place. I enjoy it there. I wouldn't know whether the rest stops in Texas are the cleanest. I've only been to Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, south Carolina, Virginia, Arkansas and Tennessee and compared to them ours are clean. As for the picture, I changed it back to me a few days ago. Sometimes it takes browsers a while to catch up. Yes, The old fuzzy-faced curmudgeon in the picture is really me. Taken last summer and yes, I still have my beard. My wife calls that my pimp hat, but she likes it better than the hat I work around the yard in. *L* Respectfully, Rett: "A Democracy can withstand anything but Democrats." Robert A.
