Winter's end (Seasonal Sonnets III)
inhale frost's spicy odour, breathe in deep
soon other scents will flavour the night's breeze
walk without haste, step firm with conscious feet
enjoy the crunching of the snow beneath
the sun is turning coldness to a drip
where dreamy fields of sparkling white now spread
earth soon will writhe from winter's fading grip
and colours reign supremely in their stead
the cranes and geese are on their way back home
tired snowdrops rise from chaiselongues of soil
till later lilies dot the green like foam
first harbingers of amaryllic toil
the sunbird's incarnation will soon wake
quick, savour the taste of your last snowflake
soon other scents will flavour the night's breeze
walk without haste, step firm with conscious feet
enjoy the crunching of the snow beneath
the sun is turning coldness to a drip
where dreamy fields of sparkling white now spread
earth soon will writhe from winter's fading grip
and colours reign supremely in their stead
the cranes and geese are on their way back home
tired snowdrops rise from chaiselongues of soil
till later lilies dot the green like foam
first harbingers of amaryllic toil
the sunbird's incarnation will soon wake
quick, savour the taste of your last snowflake
