R.I.P. Malcolm McLaren
The death today of the iconaclastic founder of the 'Sex Pistols' -the nihilistic pop group that spawned a cultural shift in music, art and film, has left me feeling affected and mourning my youth somewhat.
It's hard to explain to my daughter's generation ,the impact the punk movement had on life in the UK. The fact that it pissed off my teachers and my parents...made them unbelievably attractive to me at the time!
Yes, the Sex Pistols were unattractive physically, they were totally disprespectful to all authority figures....even our Queen (off with their heads!)...but their music had a raw truth and cut through all the American pseudo-soul that littered out pop charts at the time. Malcolm McLaren started an arts movement that shook the Establishment...allowed the flourishing of enfant terribles in music and art and breathed energised, angry, questioning talent into Britain. it was 'cool' to be British and leading the world in music and fashion.
He was a flambouyant failure as a husband to Vivian Westwood, but they remained friends and he was a 'presence' with various art projects in his semi-exiled state in Paris. He was a dysfunctional person like many true artists.
To me, he was to music as Jack Karouec or Lawrence Ferlingetti was to the shift in gear of poetry.
He made an impact on me and has made me feel my mortality today.
R I P Malcolm Mclaren...hope you tear it up wherever your spirit takes you!
