Pastures Of Green,Only A Dream

Pastures of green
evaded me
throughout my childhood years

Summer days of youth
were not spent in game
the only time the air was fresh
after a pouring rain

There were chores to be done
no time for fun
but on rare occasions
there were times to be had
when permitted by dad

To go to the park
of concrete and steel
I cannot describe
how that walk made me feel

The sun beating down on black top roads
concrete under my feet
these were the times
I'd let my mind wander
and daydream of green and sweet

The air would reek of stale beer from the bars
along with exhaust from cars
and let us not forget
the cans filled with garbage
lining the apartment  house walls

Dog refuse and urine
mixed with the smells of human
and the wolf whistles from
the men playing dominoes

But it was summer
and school was out
so you make the best
of what you had
and not what you did without

stick ball and handball
hop scotch and skates
oh and  do not forget
the soap box scooters
that were handmade to race

Clothespin dolls and marbles
dreams of natures marvels
n'er a song bird to be heard
nor the fragrance of crisp clean air

Still I spent my summer days
as if I had not a care

Chrys...

enjoyed the read, took me back to summer in Jersey, although it wasn't quite what you experienced, there was still woods surrounding the city there, and that's where we played. I talked to a friend from there recently, all the woods are gone, replaced with houses galore. Glad your dream came true Chrys. Richard

Yes...

I related very well to your write... wasn't really a Jersey boy though, an army brat, but we spent almost three years there. I was an outsider for much of the time except by one guy, and he and I still talk every once in while.

I suppose I was fortunate in some ways, in others less so. Children have incredible resilience as long as their innate beauty has not been destroyed. Thanks for sharing, Chrys. This piece of yours also took my back to the good old days of hopscotch, jacks and pick up sticks. Your poem took me back and as I continued reading it felt an overwhelming joy of the memories you brought back to life. A very good piece you have presented here and I say to you Magnifico My Poe!! Mona Many thanks to you for such a beautiful comment yes , played all of those games as well as stick ball in the street , punch ball at the park bottle caps ,off the wall etc. Isn't it something how these days a child sits and plays Video games all day . Whatever happened to going outdoors and getting air, such as it was? Chrys

Exactly

Yes I know if my son is not on his cell phone in his room, he is either on the computer or his xbox 360 but today he really surprised me as he pressure washed the entire fence and helped his Uncle pressure wash the house as we are getting ready for painting. He does help me pretty good as a teen you know. Now if I can only get that cell phone out of his hands. LOL We did not have those kind of things when we were young that's for sure and we sure got to bed early too!! love and hugs to you Mona

Pastures of Green

The short lines resonate with a simplicity and innocence of youth.Lovely imagery perhaps a more definite conclusion.Keep it up or it will dry up.
