Poetry is Passion.
I can be accused of becoming melodramatic, I guess, being British and having so much in that vein from the past floating about in my blood!!!
Passion may be for humour, for fear, love-whatever moves our 'spirits.'
How much to expose is up to the poet, but as long as that exposure isn't vulgar, distasteful, then there's not much that need be covered up!
Emotional doesn't at all only mean sad, passionate, yes. Many people who write poetry are forced to it by their dire circumstances and it becomes an outlet for emotions, or a cathartic for them; in fact very many write due to something extreme, like being in love, or desperately ill, and this adds a poignancy to the poetry which, if it is good, can move us too.
I said a bit for you Lou!
