The river reminds me...
The river reminds me that…
oarsmen sit backwards.
A great view of the backtrail.
Noticing after the fact where they’ve been.
As I gaze at our backtrail
I contemplate the zig-zag nature of the path,
and note that I am immediately judgemental.
“I should be able to row straighter”.
So many factors at play-
winds, current, waves,
right arm stronger than the left.
Captain gazes forward at the horizon
so he can choose our path,
guide and direct;
suggest course corrections
when invited (aha!).
I recall the trails of long ago sailing jaunts.
They were never intended to be straight lines.
The trails were a lovely record
of our waltz with wind and water.

The river reminds me...
Hello!
To begin, it is wonderful that, through your poetry, you are still on the river! I understand you have a series of poems from your experiences with the Columbia River. What a perfect way to preserve such an amazing trip. I like the practical logistics blended within the spiritual thoughts and feelings. Your final stanza is endearing, and brings me back to the beginning of your poem, relating to the intimate personification of the river.
Thank you!
