Revenge or suicide?
The taste of vengeance, sharp and deep,
A secret hunger, restless sleep.
It calls you close, then burns your soul,
A bitter thirst that takes its toll.
In justice's name, you seek to strike,
To balance wrongs, to make it right.
But with each blow, a part of you
Unravels in the darker hue.
The urge is sweet, the path is clear,
Yet in the end, you disappear.
What once was whole, now breaks apart,
Revenge consumes the fragile heart.
The scales may tip, but at what cost?
For in the end, you've all but lost.
The self you were, the love you knew,
Now shadowed by the deeds you do.
A fleeting peace, a fleeting grace,
Then emptiness—a hollow place.
The price of payback’s never fair,
It chains you in its choking glare.
What’s justice worth, when it destroys
The very soul it once employed?

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
This poem explores the psychological and moral costs of revenge, employing a consistent ABAB rhyme scheme and a reflective, somber tone. The structure is composed of six quatrains, each developing the central theme: the self-destructive nature of vengeance and its corrosive effect on the individual.
The poem’s diction is direct and accessible, relying on familiar metaphors (“taste of vengeance,” “bitter thirst,” “scales may tip”) to convey emotional intensity. The use of sensory language in the opening stanza (“sharp and deep,” “restless sleep”) effectively establishes the visceral impact of the desire for revenge. The poem’s rhetorical questions and parallel constructions (“But with each blow, a part of you / Unravels in the darker hue”) reinforce the internal conflict and gradual unraveling of the self.
The poem’s argument unfolds logically: the initial allure of revenge gives way to its destructive consequences, culminating in existential loss (“What once was whole, now breaks apart”). The closing stanzas shift from the pursuit of justice to the emptiness that follows, suggesting that the pursuit itself is self-defeating.
One area for further development is the imagery, which tends toward abstraction (“darker hue,” “hollow place,” “choking glare”). More concrete or original images could deepen the emotional resonance and distinguish the poem from other meditations on similar themes. Additionally, the poem’s rhythm is generally consistent, but some lines (“The price of payback’s never fair”) have a slightly different meter, which may disrupt the otherwise steady flow.
The title’s juxtaposition of “Revenge or suicide?” is provocative, framing the poem as a meditation on self-destruction. However, the poem itself leans more heavily into the theme of revenge than suicide; clarifying or integrating the latter more explicitly could strengthen the connection between title and content.
Overall, the poem demonstrates clear thematic focus and structural discipline, but could benefit from more vivid imagery and a closer alignment between title and content.

You've portrayed vengeance…
You've portrayed vengeance for what it is quite well. It calls you close then burns your soul, l like that, like it's some form of a hell in and of itself.
