Perdoa meu pai

Perdoa meu pai
I am not a snob
Person that
Tells me that
I am
They are hurting
Me so badly
Pai
I don't think
My friends care
If they also hurt
My feelings
Pai
I am not a vegetable
I am somebody with
Feelings
Perdoa meu pai
For let you down
So many times
I had made lots
Of promises
But I never
Kept any
Also I know
That you are not
Happy with me
Pai
I have to change
My behavior
Towards you
Also I don't blame
You for being
Sad with me
Pai
I should be happy
That I have you in
My life
Yes pai
I am always praying for you
Every night my father
No matter how tired
I am I know that
I must pray
To you pai
Also pai
I am very happy
That I am your son
Pai
Also pai I know
That you are proud
Of me
Now the night rolled in
And the day is over
It is 9:00 pm in the evening
The sun went down
And the sunset arrived
Now the night rolled in
Now it is time for my
Bed time
I already took my meds
For the night
I never stay up past
My bad time
Because I would mess up
My sleep schedule
I know that sleep
Is also important for me

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

This poem presents a direct, confessional voice, addressing a father with a mix of apology, vulnerability, and self-reflection. The code-switching between Portuguese ("Perdoa meu pai") and English creates a sense of intimacy and cultural specificity, suggesting a bilingual or bicultural context. The repeated invocation of "pai" functions as both refrain and anchor, reinforcing the poem's emotional focus.

The poem's structure is fragmented, with short lines and abrupt breaks. This fragmentation mirrors the speaker's emotional state—hesitant, searching, and possibly overwhelmed. The lack of punctuation and the frequent line breaks create a sense of breathlessness and immediacy, as if the speaker is confessing thoughts as they arise. This approach can be effective in conveying vulnerability, but it also risks becoming monotonous if not varied or shaped for emphasis.

The poem moves between themes: the speaker's hurt from others, feelings of inadequacy, guilt over broken promises, and a desire for reconciliation. The narrative shifts in the latter half to a more mundane, almost diaristic tone, describing bedtime routines and medication. This shift grounds the poem in the everyday, contrasting with the earlier emotional intensity. However, the transition between these modes is abrupt, and the connection between the emotional and the mundane could be more explicitly developed to enhance cohesion.

Imagery is sparse, with the most vivid moment being "the sun went down / And the sunset arrived." Otherwise, the poem relies on direct statement rather than sensory detail or metaphor. This directness can be powerful, but the poem might benefit from more concrete images or figurative language to deepen its emotional resonance and avoid abstraction.

The poem’s repetition of "pai" and the phrase "Perdoa meu pai" provides a sense of ritual, almost prayer-like, which aligns with the references to praying at night. This motif could be further developed to unify the poem and heighten its emotional impact.

Overall, the poem’s strengths lie in its raw honesty and the sense of a real voice grappling with familial expectations and self-worth. To further develop the poem, consider shaping the structure to emphasize key moments, introducing more sensory detail, and clarifying the connection between the emotional confessions and the daily routines. This could help the poem move beyond confession into a more layered exploration of the speaker’s relationship with their father and themselves.
