Lie detective

Hold me at gunpoint
and hook me to a
Polygraph
Ask me for my name,
my age,
my home town
The needle will move
accurately,
slowly,
recording my bodies response
Then ask me about my lover
ask me about his eyes,
his voice,
his laugh
Ask me about his cooking,
his demeanour,
his scent
Then check your machine again
and find his name spelled out
letter by letter
Vowel by vowel
And then dare ask me if I truly love him

Neopoet AI [2025-04]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

This poem effectively uses the metaphor of a polygraph test to explore themes of love, truth, and emotional vulnerability. The progression from factual questions (name, age, hometown) to intimate details about the lover creates a compelling contrast that heightens the emotional stakes. The imagery of the polygraph needle moving "accurately, slowly" adds a tactile, almost clinical dimension that contrasts with the deeply personal subject matter, which is a strong stylistic choice.

One area for potential refinement is the poem’s rhythm and line breaks. Some lines feel uneven in length, which can disrupt the flow when read aloud. For example, the shift from short lines ("my age, / my home town") to longer ones ("recording my bodies response") could be smoothed out to enhance cadence and pacing. Additionally, the phrase "my bodies response" might benefit from an apostrophe ("body’s") to clarify possession.

The final lines deliver a powerful emotional payoff, especially with the polygraph revealing the lover's name "letter by letter / Vowel by vowel." This personification of the machine almost suggests that love itself is an undeniable truth, which is a compelling idea. However, the phrase "And then dare ask me if I truly love him" could be strengthened by rephrasing to heighten the tension or emotional defiance—perhaps by varying the verb or adding more sensory detail.

Overall, the poem’s concept is strong and the imagery evocative. Focusing on tightening the rhythm and polishing some phrasing would enhance its impact.

Lie detective!

Wow, what a poem! If I could hold onto someone like this, I'd give my whole soul just to coexist. This may sound shallow, but I feel that we all need a lover, upon which we can rely. An interesting way to convey your feelings. I don't care if I read it correctly, but this is how the poem caused me to feel!
