Decorations

The silk poinsettia
rests on the hill,
quite a distance from
the gravestone of the
father, mother,
sister, brother,
child, friend
reposing in the cemetery.

The holiday is over,
as is another year.

But a life,
tucked away into
the unknown,
is remembered
in many ways.

Decorations of
the season -

valentines
shamrocks
summer florals
pumpkins

and one swept away
poinsettia
poised on this hill,
its purpose living on,
its voice still heard,

"Happy Holiday. You are missed."

Dear Lavender

What a charming way to symbolize life. The repetition by the end worked really well for me and life goes on no matter how much we lose and whoever we lose.

Well chosen title too!

Thank you for sharing dear!

Hello, Rula,

I walk through the cemetery several times a week.  It's so touching to see the decorations representing the feelings of living relatives and friends.

Thank you for reading!

Enjoyed the poem. Pumpkins, though? Do pumpkins get left at gravesides?

Hello, Ray,

Yep...pumpkins,too!  I live in a small town, and the cemetery here is decorated throughout the year, but the town actually adores the fall holidays - Halloween and Thanksgiving.  Pumpkins and chrysanthemums abundantly grace the gravestones.

Thank you for reading!
