Seduced By Stupidity

Is it just me
Or have we
Been seduced
By stupidity

This can’t be reality
Must be a Netflix show
Damn—pause won’t
Stop this madness

There’s a game
Of political chess
And the pawns
Believed the king

Probability
Looks realistic
Seems like reason
Has been blacklisted

I wish that time machine
Worked so I could send
The tireless leaders
Back to the Stone Age

’Cause over here
They need to be
Returned for
A refund—with interest

They love to shut things down
What would happen if
We opened our eyes?
They’d be kicked out of town

Can we go on a date
With calm and collected?
Stupidity is contagious
And Capitol Hill is infected

Neopoet AI (premium) [2025-04]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem employs a conversational tone and rhetorical questioning to frame a critique of contemporary political and social dynamics. The opening stanza establishes a collective sense of bewilderment, inviting the reader to consider complicity or passive acceptance ("Is it just me / Or have we / Been seduced / By stupidity"). The use of "seduced" personifies stupidity as an active force, suggesting allure and agency, which gives the critique a satirical edge.

The second stanza introduces a pop culture reference ("Must be a Netflix show"), which situates the poem in a modern context and underscores a sense of unreality or disbelief. The line "Damn—pause won’t / Stop this madness" cleverly plays with the metaphor, highlighting the lack of control felt by the speaker.

The chess metaphor in the third stanza ("There’s a game / Of political chess / And the pawns / Believed the king") is effective in conveying the idea of manipulation and misplaced trust. However, the metaphor could be developed further for greater impact; as written, it risks oversimplifying complex political dynamics.

The poem’s structure is consistent, with short, enjambed lines that create a sense of urgency and fragmentation. This mirrors the poem’s thematic focus on chaos and disorder. The language is accessible, which aligns with the poem’s intent to reach a broad audience, but at times, this simplicity leads to generalizations ("Stupidity is contagious / And Capitol Hill is infected") that may weaken the argument by relying on familiar tropes.

The poem’s satirical tone is clear, particularly in the wish to "return" leaders "for a refund—with interest." This line employs consumerist language to critique political leadership, but the metaphor could be sharpened to avoid cliché.

The closing stanzas attempt to move from critique to a call for change ("What would happen if / We opened our eyes?"), though the rhetorical questions remain unanswered, leaving the poem’s resolution somewhat open-ended. The final lines return to the central metaphor, reinforcing the poem’s main argument but without offering a new insight or perspective.

Overall, the poem effectively channels frustration and skepticism about political leadership and collective behavior. To strengthen the piece, consider developing the metaphors further, avoiding overused expressions, and exploring more specific imagery or examples to ground the critique and make it more memorable.

Annnd...

The pawns believe the king. Leave the [ed] off from believed. You establish the
when, with the word [There's]. A perfect piece of satire for these times.
Nicely done, ~ Geez.
