Part of the Pack
Coco is a tactical
practical genius
as she considers
my leftover convenience store chicken
doused in copious amounts of sriracha and honey and Chil Fila sauce.
She lets out a single bark,
with a steady paw on my leg,
certain that my unwillingness to share these clandestine treats
must be a simple oversight.
I give her the side-eye,
the look that says “not today,
knowing this is not
the way of the pack,
that rushes the bowl,
that rushes the kill,
and the slice of turkey I gave her
a few moments prior to my sitting down
is long forgotten
as my teeth
sink in
to crisp skin
and she looks
vigilant and hopeful
at a meal she’ll never have.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
This poem effectively captures a vivid, intimate moment between the speaker and Coco, presumably a dog, using detailed sensory imagery and subtle emotional undercurrents. The choice to focus on the specific sauces—sriracha, honey, and Chick-fil-A sauce—grounds the poem in a contemporary, relatable setting, adding a layer of humor and specificity that enriches the scene.
The poem’s structure, with its free verse form and enjambment, mirrors the natural flow of thought and interaction, lending an immediacy to the moment. The pacing slows during the description of the sauces and Coco’s reaction, then accelerates with the speaker’s internal justification and final bite, effectively conveying tension and denial.
One area to consider is the poem’s tonal balance. While the humor and affection are clear, the phrase “a meal she’ll never have” introduces a slightly harsher note that could be explored further. Is this a commentary on boundaries within the human-animal relationship, or a reflection on desire and denial more broadly? Expanding on this theme could deepen the poem’s emotional resonance.
Additionally, the poem might benefit from tightening certain lines to enhance rhythm and impact. For example, the line “my unwillingness to share these clandestine treats / must be a simple oversight” could be rephrased for clarity and punch, perhaps by emphasizing Coco’s hopeful misunderstanding more sharply.
Overall, the poem succeeds in portraying a nuanced interaction, balancing humor, affection, and subtle tension. Further refinement of tone and line economy could elevate its emotional and rhythmic power.
