Me and My Kidneys

Two bean-shaped stones that wash the inner sea,
Like quiet monks who sift the morning sand.
They weigh the salt and hold the silver flow,
To keep the blood as clear as mountain glass.

My plate is now a lab of alchemy,
Where every bite decides the spirit’s weight.
The sugar rises like a heavy tide,
A sticky syrup clogging narrow gates.

The heart then labors like a weary ox,
To pull the burden through the thickened dark.
So I shall choose the fuel to tend the fire,
And keep the chemistry of life in tune.

how we destroy our bodies with the garbage we eat and drink, plus hereditary factors means that some half a million Americans have critical kidney disease. Well said Mark, but I think that I would have used [tend] instead of mend the fire. ~ Geez.
