A life of distress, a life of happiness

Life is a cycle, a cycle of chance,

there are times  of  blissful happiness

And then there are times of distress.

The first years of my life

passed with pleasant ease

I knew no strife

everything was mine to seize

yes, all was rife

it was a summer breeze,

I went around the whole wide earth

I enjoyed everything with ease.

Then came a day of dearth

I was brought to my knees

all my money was gone in a flash,

then came serious disease,

and even worse, then came drinking with a dash.

It all brought me down to my knees.

I had to stand up to my own two feet

I had to try and seize

any challenge I would meet.

And so indeed I truly did.

I overcame every trouble I could treat.

Today I’m my habitual self, I’m rock solid,

I lead a regular life again,

I’m a happy man, a man with no pain.

Then in a twist of fate, a twist I can’t explain

my life took an even more pleasant turn

I fell in love with Elaine,

a woman that would make my heart burn.

We’ve been together ever since

living in absolute, romantic, loving bliss.

So, you see, life has its own cycles of Eden and the abyss

You fathom the bottoms

And you relish the tops…
