As Stan says it is a little like the old Spotlight thing but I am sure that the leaders of the workshops could be persuaded to put some poems forward.
Hopefully not their own, they could have their own comp to find the top three LOL Thanks anyway, Yours Ian.T

Hi Ian

Although I like the top poem idea , i can't help but recall the problems that "spotlighting" caused at old site. Plus, who determines top poem?..................stan PS it's my understanding that the neopoet book is still on agenda.........

I would suggest

that the best poetry
composed by the Neopoets (So far.).
one each be selected,
and
these could be edited and modified
and then published
as the

''None other than Neopoets :: World''

To avoid the spotlight problems

I think a monthly poem could be chosen by either the workshop leaders/mentors, advocates, the book committee or some combination thereof.

Sounds good to me.

Have had some thought on this:-
Would it be better for just a list of poems 100 or so and their author to be put out each month, this could be upgraded by the poets, via comment from them.
Then all we have to do is check that poets list and read the poem selected if needed, and there would always be a continuous list for publication when required.
This would have to be put together maybe, by Voting for the final 80 or so for a book
To have to go through months of poetry from each poet would be out of the question.
I think that each poet knows which of their works is suitable for a chance at being published, for the betterment of Neopoet.
It could be submitted as a Kindle book on a yearly basis.
Take care young Jess, Yours Ian.T

Your poetry would shine from the door of the fridge, even that's a good Idea put some good stuff on Fridge magnets lol.
Though you don't teach on Neopoet your input and advice is well received and thought so much of.
Just don't take my word for that just look at your reviews.
Take care young Wolf your lodge is full of children that need to be taught..Hope you enjoyed that Coffee the other day LOL

Thank you Rula

I think that though we have many poems ready for publication, we will still have to wait a while before we can use them, yet the thing about putting them some place easily accessible on one list of about One Hundred would bring in a competitiveness as Poets would keep an eye on the position of their poems.
So many great poems are on stream but those before the crash where are they and the ones being generated now.
All the poetry at the moment goes on stream and then is left to the system of Time.
I often go back a few months to see what was there and it is a great place to learn also.
But each poet should select their own and they could be put on a Blog type list that is permanent but up graded even if only by title.
Anyway thank you for your thoughts on this one, take care of you,
Yours Ian.T

the old spotlight

was what people liked
period

if your poem was likeable
well written
the poet had a talent
people responded

Im trying to think back on who
got the spotlight shut down
it wasnt like everyone just
got together and quit using
the system

I didnt mind the old system
i voted always

it was something Andrew and Paul
put up for the poets

Hello

If my memory doesn't fail the spotlight was in place up until the site crash.................stan

Esker

Esker

12 years 10 months ago

You may be right

I just remember it being an issue
and anyway the actual archive of work
that survived the crash
is the Poetry! the most important thing

Maybe using the blog feature or the workshop
to create a favourite work of the day or week??
before it was based on what people were reading
and enjoying

I had no issues myself with it
because it was just a header item
and the body of work here was the poetry blogs
workshops and comment feild
the spotlight like everything is an option
there are really no musts

I just think the popular issue with the work
should be left with the people

and again this is just my own personal opinion
on this.........................steven

Spotlight failed because a few people

made multiple accounts to vote for themselves for ego reasons. It happened often enough that a few people even got caught and warned, and when persisting, suspended.

What do you do in the face of that sort of behaviour?

That's why we are looking for a new way to feature the best poems.

Esker

I can see that being a reason then

kind of like cancelling driving though because people speed
ha ha ha

interesting

we are poets we have favourites!!
lets try and think of something then!!

I think

(which probably suprises everyone lol) that some method of giving recognition to above average poetry would be great. But the devil is in the details. I think previous spotlight was based on number of reads a poem received which kind of made it a popularity contest. But if a new spotlight was based on merit only, who would judge the poems? If it's always the same people, the tendency would be to award those with similar writing styles as the judges (not on Purpose, but subliminaly). Maybe a rotating 3-4 person committee would work which was appointed by AC and which changed every 6-8 weeks and awarded spotlight once or twice per weeK?......just offered as a starting point for discussion.....................stan

Hi Eddie

Would You be willing to serve on such a committee? Be warned that this type thing would consume a great deal of time because one couldn't just browse the poems getting the most reads. Often there are outstanding poems which get little notice so a judge would have to pretty much read Every poem posted then rank them. The only way I see that this could be done would be for a judge to select his/her "favorite" poem for each day then come the end of the week choose among the daily favorites then at the end of the month choose from among the weekly winners. If this sounds like it would be a lot of work...it should because it Would be..............stan

Oh yes, you will be left out

nothing to do with the quality of your poetry but because no-one likes a try-hard whiner always screaming "see me!" "see me!" like an adolescent girl and playing the victim when it doesn't happen.

A highlighted poem weekly

may soon be introduced.

The book... well that's a big project, we could always benefit from more people volunteering, if not for the book project then to help with all the other services Neopoet offers, Workshops, Mentors, Greeters and Advocates, the Newsletter, to free others up to work on the book.

If more poets commented on a work, and made the usual suggestions for improving the same, then at the same time they could rate it to be placed in the monthly top poems.
But I fear that the number of comments per poem would not be a good judge of quality, of either correct form or just poetic worth.
I started to sort out poems for the top poems a while back but the project was shelved so I just gave up.
I had a form for permission to print and had selected a few poems but that was back in 2012, do you want me to start again???
Yours, Ian

Highlighted poem etc.

Just refresh my memory. Are these to be REAL poems (rhyming and scanning) , or the modern, simplified efforts ?

This was nearly a year ago just before the site went down I couldn't use Ian.T for a while so I am writing under Sparrow now.
The book is in the hands of Stan now so have a word with him and see what gives we are trying to put a book together though.
Take care out there

Pretty much settled.

Thank you Ian and everyone for your input. The solution was found to be the simplest and most effective, the 'Featured Poem' will be run with anonymous Advocates choosing the monthly Featured New Member Poem.

This solution avoids all the problems associated with the 'Spotlight Poem'. It won't degenerate into a popularity contest or encourage multiple membership voter scamming. It has 'expert stamp of approval' by being selected by Advocates. There can be no accusations of favouritism because of the rotation. No delays or argument caused by judges voting. Neat, simple and clean.

Hi good people

When I joined this site, I spent some time weighing the poetry I could find here and how I felt my work compared. I was relieved to see rhyming work to be quite honest. But it took a nudge from lovedly to get me to post my first work. I'm quite certain I haven't read a large percentage of really nice work and might not ever find them.
It would be nice if there was a section that showcased what was considered to be the cream of the poets here.

I agree that the decided picks should be made by a director of sorts.

Thomas

Can we have a top poem of the month. I mean the one that attains the excellence that the workshops are going for ??
This is in the future view, of having Neopoet's own Book put on line at a later date.
I had put forward the Idea that here we have enough very good poets to put out a book.
The Top poems could be the base for the book, and maybe, if there were a second or third place poem they would supply enough poetry for a great publication,
Yours Ian.T
