The Look You Gave Me (Changed)

Rewriting Memory

There was always a kind of sadness in your eyes
Even when you were baby and looked at me
There was always this emotive tone in your voice
So young and yet so full of melancholy

In those days there was an innocence in your face
While I prayed that you’d remember our special time
But as you grew there was dejection in your soul
One I knew would spread by some other grand design

As the years passed and felt distance tear us apart
The waters then became tainted and weren’t the same
I understood the latter years would be harder
When I received nothing but the blame, guilt and shame

But now at this stage in life I reflect patiently
My imperfections led me down a different path
I own up to my faults and for that I’m sorry
But I’ve let go of that hot anger and blind wrath

The memory of the look you gave me has changed
You’re still my baby boy though we are both grown men
I’m glad to hear you are on a healing journey
And that one day soon we will embrace once again
