burnout
like a teardrop of wax, trickling down a candle’s side
her viscosity ephemeral, her scent sweet and fleeting
slow and steady, pained and dying
but she believes she can escape
a child with a wild, wild drive
determined to leap from the candle’s shoulder
she wonders if she could fly if she tried
she dreams of freedom
she’s burning up
she fights for freedom
she’s burning out
but the merciless, cold air halts her fleeing
seizes her
captures her
Read the rest of the poem Show less
shackles her
she hardens, a dry, lonely husk
many others have tried
all have dried
all have died
like a candle, burned to a melted, unwanted shell
so empty that it cannot cry anymore
and when the tears stop
the flame goes out

About Me
Jen Roxu is an undergraduate student and QuestBridge Scholar studying at The Johns Hopkins University's Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, double-majoring in Writing Seminars and Film & Media Studies with a minor in Theater Arts. She is an avid cinephile, zealous thespian, passionate poet, and aspiring playwright-screenwriter who seeks to use her words as a force for positive change. Jen's poems have previously been published in Columbia University Press, Up North Literary Magazine, Cathartic Youth Literary Magazine, The Weight Journal, and Teen Ink Magazine, and she hopes to author a full-length book someday. When she is not writing scripts and directing shows for JHU Witness Theater, acting in a Barnstormers production, or brainstorming ideas for the next chapter of her dystopian science fiction novel, you can find Jen taking long walks in nature parks, knitting scarves by the windowsill, dancing along to Taylor Swift music, and going out for boba with her best friends!
