Winter's Song

Autumn dripping leaves of weary gold Exits quietly, fading through the trees. Hawthorn shakes her cloak of ruby fire. Naked to the woods and twisting breeze.   Winter’s breath now lingers in the air. Strands of whispered frost on silver lace. Deep within the green a distant voice. Calls the breeze to dance with chilling grace.   Winter’s tune plays keenly on the wind. Snowflakes dance and play her melody. Wrapped in fur she drapes the scene in white. Nature shrouded, steeped in mystery.   Winter’s touch threads spider’s webs with gems. Diamond drops of cold reflected glass. Water turns to stone with breathless ease. Frozen daggers arm each blade of grass.   Winter’s kiss enchants the wood to sleep. Holly smiles and stains her berries bright. Mistletoe wound tight on blackened bough. Strands of pearl reflecting ghostly light.   Winter’s song plays on throughout the night. Nature’s secrets slumber in the earth. Spring will wake them with the sun’s return Thaw the ground and call them to rebirth.

Personification

that really took me there ...you missed not a single observation Kaz. Vivid imagery fills me as I read this poem. In ink, David ps title well with song it goes bring lyrical expectation but well it is a hard call to change anything about this poem.

excellent

You summed it up just about right, and how winter throws this blanket over the beauty of earth. But it's a beautiful blanket, too. That's what I get here, and how spring will come after, so enjoy the "frozen daggers on each blade of grass" 'cause it'll soon pass ... Reminds me of a cool b side Tom Waits song: "You can never hold back spring." Thanks for sharing, George (Chicago, IL, USA)

A Beautiful ...

and nostalgic and memorable picture you paint here so adroitly. Thanx, Chuck PS: Dare I announce that soon I will suffer (for about two weeks) Puerto Rico's daily 85-degree F. sunburning weather? For that brief time, amidst sand, hot sun, and Atlantic's gentle surf, I'll have only my own memory and your vivid northern winter's song to remind me of what I miss during my stay.

Thanks everyone

For your comments. They are very much appreciated. Decision made - the title stays as this seems to suit the poem. I am really pleased the personification worked and images within the poem came across so well. Hey Chuck - how come we didnt get an invite to the sun? lol. It sounds glorious, I hope you have a good time! I shall think of you jealously my friend. Winter's Song is in full flow here. There is a sharp frost tonight and the trees have shed the last of their finery. All we need is snow and I suspect that won't be too far away A hot chocolate sounds just the thing Donna - brrrr! :-) Thanks again everyone. :-) Kaz It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

You sing the song of winter Kaz. I feel like I've been sung to. So beautiful, a wonderful experience. Thank you, Mark
