Vanquished

If it wasn't love,

I don't know what it was.

Maybe visions of grandeur
oh it had to be close.

I'm still reeling in the feeling,

in a spin I can't win.

Is it egg on my face, gum on my shoe?

Why can't I forget it, just forget about you?

Vanquished, uninspired,

never thought I could win.

My stalemate in the shadows,

I can't stop thinking of then.

I've lost feeling in the reeling,

just wanted my spin.

I'm pretty sure this was love,

if not...come fool me again.

Fool Me again

This is great. If it wasnt love it sounded pretty close. I like the way you capture an emotion, thought and just go with it. Excellent. Kaz It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

reeling in the feeling

nice touch of assonance, and then you repeat it and twist it around, a bit like in a song... Thanks for sharing, ID P.S. Was it granduer or grandeur?

What's love?

As your poem points out, it's hard to know when love is genuine. Sometimes we only realize it was the real thing when it's over, because we miss our ex-partner so much! I like the idea of you having got close enough to love for it to be worth repeating the experience. Perhaps a sixty or seventy percent love affair could be more sustainable than a hundred percent burning passion! I will soon be posting a poem called 'What's love?' and would be grateful for your comments. Best wishes, Robert.

Hi Robert...

thank you for your understanding... if we lived in a perfect world... it'd be boring! Richard

Lost in the gummy egg yolk of love

"Is it egg on my face, gum on my shoe?" - I love this line, esp. the image of gum that unpleasantly sticks with you every step you take. It's probably both. "My stalemate in the shadows," - also think this is a very good line but wonder if it might read a little better as "I'm stalemate in the shadows." Great ending. Nice breezy quality. I agree with ID; it has a song-like sound. I enjoyed it.
