Injecting Society

Why do they allow him to suffer that way?
Confined to his bed, no dignity kept.
Struggling to breathe...
If an animal were suffering
would it be kept alive
to wollow in it's pain..?
NO, it's misery would be ended
one shot away!
No more suffering a torturous death.
So why then, does society say
that a human should carry on
to live another miserable day?
Hearing people say, Ure doing fine...
You'll be ok...just give it time!
Alone in a hospital bed
wanting to end it all.
SO alone, desperately shattered...
Thinking of the past, alive and free
then thinking of tomorrow
and what will never be.
Crying silent tears,
putting on a brave face.
Smiling for the moment
leaving behind the memories
That one cannot replace!
There HAS to be a voice out there,
or a sympathetic ear,
To help those suffering day after day
their choice is very clear.
Give them the right to dignity,
let them keep their self respect
allow them grace for eternity
to live and die, the way it was meant to be.

Mel, I can't

really give an objective review on this piece due to the fact that we recently lost my father-in-law to ALS after nearly three years. It was horrible. I just wanted you to know that someone has read your poem and empathizes. I'll leave the critique to someone else this time. My best, Ronda

I believe in a person's right to death in cases like that. The only one who ever really tried was Kevorkian and he was sent to prison. I think he went overboard with it though. He is out now and promised never to assist suicide again. I really liked the poem and its questions. Rett

Hi Mel...

a contraversial subject to be sure... sad place to visit, a nursing home... full of lost hopes and death beds.. and people wanting to end it.. I am almost fifty.. have seen many in my family suffer to the end.. the hospitols keep them alive with machines that breathe for them, make their hearts beat.. feed them.. and collect the waste too.. you can virtually be alive while you die and know it.. and not be able to say anything... what is the answer? sorry.. this subject happens to be one I'm passionate about.. maybe its because I'm old.. loved your questioning poem.. Understood

Mel Inwood It IS a tough one, I know...and maybe there just needs to be compassion in cases like that. They can perform miracles sometimes.
