The Beast Has Returned

Boom, boom, boom,
I thought we had learned
Don't look now
But, the beast
Has returned

I thought tonight
I would get some relief
But, once again
I steal sleep
Like a thief

Once again
His roar splits the night
Once we prayed for rain
Now, it gives us fright

Every night
It pours from the sky
So much rain
That the crops
Start to die

In the wake
Of his wrath
Many will pay
Many lives will be lost
Many dreams washed away

This begins in a tone that nearly reminds me of the types of chants children sing - "rain, rain, go away" etc. It is reminiscent of the sing-song rhyme and rhythm, but the reality becomes apparent by the end of that third stanza. Introducing the lighter tone (with heavier undercurrents) and letting the more serious conclude the piece is clever, Michael. I like it. Of course, there are many areas identifying all too well with this subject right now - here included! Best, Ronda
