Where God Appears - Thanks to R.M. Shanmugam and Kailashana for the inspiration!

In the mud hovels
the huts,
that's where God appears.
In Haiti,
dirty, disease ridden streets;
that's where you'll find him.

In the east,
in the west.
In the home of the Inuit
in the north,
in Guyana,
and the tropics of the south
there He lives.

God lives between
the two ivory towers,
truth be known
they are both completely oblivious.

I saw a video recently…

I saw a video recently... generations of children, parents, grandparents living off garbage dumps. Oblivious. Does one miss something of which one is unaware? Mark, this poem is hauntingly real ~and~ beautiful. ~A p.s. I am unfamiliar with the word huvel, did you mean hovel? "We have to try to get rid of the notion of time. And when you have an intense contact of love with nature or another human being, like a spark, then you understand that there is no time and that everything is eternal." Paulo Coelho

hovel!

yes, that's right, thank you!!! I appreciate you reading this, and the inspiration. Mark W. Galatians 5:22-23 "22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against these, there is no law!" My favorite verse(s) in the Bible

Wonders......

what the two ivory towers stand for. Interesting read - makes me wonder about the conversation that sparked this one. It's funny though as I read it - what it made me think of is the actual place where God's Spirit dwells - in each believer that lives in each of those not so wonderful places. It also reminded me of my ex-husband's daughter & son in law who spent some time in the Phillppines as missionaries in that area and the similar situations they found there as well.

the ivory towers

stand for Conservatism and Liberalism. R.M. wrote a fabullous little piece about conservatism, to which Kailashana and I both commented on with takes of our own. I wrote this based on the poem and comments therein. And the point was exactly as you described, that God dwells in those places in between, in the hearts of those in those places. Mark W. Galatians 5:22-23 "22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against these, there is no law!" My favorite verse(s) in the Bible

I saw a tv show about that-

people getting their goods, including food, from the dump and living, literally, on the dump. Now, the poem-I got what you were saying but I thought it could use more description (in the east, where . . .) and a bit of a stronger ending. A call to action of some kind. This reminded me, tangentially, of a movie, Citizen X, where the Soviet gov't wouldn't look for a serial killer b/c they considered that a Western crime. You can't promote justice where you refuse to see injustice. You can't say enough about that.

thanks Arrow!

perhaps a little more meat can be a good thing. Not sure on the call to action; so many poems are a "call to actiuon" that it's almost trite in my mind. I wanted this to be a bit more observational. Perhaps I'll feel different tomorrow. I do agree with you on the ideas herein needing a bit more fleshing out. Thanks again, you rock! Mark W. PS I've seen a few cop dramas lately (Law & Order, Cold Case) that had similiar themes as you described of Citizen X. I don't think I've seen that movie, so I should check it out. One more thing

I dunno if you've thought about it but - you might want to identify which god you're referring to - it's just a thought.

Mark

This is excellent, and now I must dash off to see RM's poem so I can make the correlation. Shouldn't Guyana be capitalized?? ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction!" -"God is good, but never dance in a small boat."
