A Lesson In Acceleration

on dark expressway
my two sons with me
in our little car
speeding through the night

another car flies past
sleek and shining
darker than the night
in sodium glare

my eldest son
is so upset
"that car that
just went past -
how come we can't
go that fast?"

"just wait" I say
"just wait"
almost at
the underpass

and there it is:
the speeding
car flies by
and from deep shadow
flashing lights
glare out
the cop car pulls
the speeder over
as we approach

my sons both
turn their heads
to watch
the cop climb out
and step up
to the driver
he is about
 to ticket
as we speed on by

"three hundred
seventy-five bucks"
I tell my boys
they both look at me
"that's how much
the ticket costs
when you speed
that fast
in a construction zone."

Not a word from them.

"and that's why," I add
"you always let someone else
much faster go first."

Another car
flies by
I put my foot down
and with a grin
acellerate
into the night
"let's do it,"
I tell the boys
"let's rock."
"No dad, NO,"
they both reply
"let's not!"

Jim...

it would appear they learned the lesson well... very good write and wonderful message... Just the other night, two cars were racing through an intersection and killed a young Mother and her two year old daughter... The day before my son(17) was talking about his friends racing, I made him sit down and watch the news coverage... not quite sure if it is a lesson learned, but... thanks for posting Richard

Always looking for the opportunity to teach them something, since both are going to be home-schooled next year! Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Hi Richard

These "lesson" poems of mine are becoming a habit for me, I think! I like the format and I like writing about things that happen between my sons and me. It's fun writing them, my boys enjoy them, the only problem is that I have to wait until we do something worth writing about! Concerning speed... You know, I have no problem with going really really fast. Fast cars are great, and roaring along at 100 + mph is thrilling. But do it on a drag strip or a closed circuit track, where everyone else there knows the risks and is willing to take them. That's where speed belongs, not on public roadways! Glad you enjoyed my effort Richard Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Excellent poem. The evil of racing on the roads must stop. Your poem drives the message home. I hope all the racers would read it and mend there ways. When I come accros such drivers I slow down. At times this phrase comes out "You are in a hurry to go. May God help you". Such drivers clear my path any way and I can drive with decency. -Mohammad

Thanks Mohammad

I am glad that you liked it. No, speed does not belong on the street at all, but yes, they sure do clear a path for guys like us, don't they? Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race
