Fucking Freedom

It was simple
- Bush surrendering.
no troops entrenched
behind the White House
sod.

No improvised
bluster bomb
reseeding receding white
man’s anachronistic
burden

He was tired
of trying for Daddy's
salutes after hitching his
wagon to Cheney’s bloated moon
beam.

 He's left a solemn template
- how to dry fuck whole nations and
too sedated to know whose ass
he was lubricating with
blood

He was lost, lost, lost in the
magnitude of his brokenness, in the
suction of perverse ambition,
in colonies of swelling
corpses.

Now we are all agin' him
his "c’mon over" voodoo face
the good ol' guy who let "I want" have
the only fucking freedom he
understands

Wow, Brian

I oftentimes find it interesting to see how people from another country see the US. I'm floored by your take - as you seem to have a very good handle on US affairs, and the general feeling of the populace. Your third stanza really kicked me in the ass, and made my jaw drop, as it was perfectly executed, I feel. 5 stars just for having the balls to post something like this.... much respect, though I would brace for an onslaught if I were you. ~Jess K. ----------------------- "Why worry? There should be laughter after pain. There should be sunshine after rain. These things have always been the same. So why worry now?" - Dire Straits

Dear Jessica,

I suppose I would not ever have written this particular poem if were not for you and the many people I have come to care about at neopoet. My personal preference are love poems. And, I suppose, in a way I see this poem as a sort of love poem too. A love poem to neopoet members about accepting difficult, messy, fearful topics. I cannot think of anyone who has made such a mess as President, whether we are speaking of economics, foreign policy generally, middle east politics, environmental issues, poverty issues, health and many others. I do think he did well to help Africa on Aids. After that, it is tough pickings. American's, with some cause, are proud of their place of leadership. It is exceptionally clear that America lead's the world whether the route is to the abyss or otherwise. I don't think most Americans aspire to the former. This man was out of his depth the whole way, knew it, and went on anyway to many tragic places. Obviously, this poem comes after the horse has bolted. But there remains some purpose in vilifying the behavior that Bush engaged in for someone is sure to consider doing something similar again. And what a challenge to try to fix things. Thank you, Jessica, for your kind response.

Dear Brian

Wooohooooo :D ..... I am so glad this made it to spotlight ..... Sometimes when people are confronted by language fuck , etc they shy away , I never will I can swear with the best of them when need be but where I come from real ladies dont swear (but you try and tell me that LOL) I am sorry but this is a confronting poem that faces real issues, most people cant face, but this just shows how open minded we all are here at neopoet... I cant say how glad I am ... LOL and when I seen your title I couldnt NOT comment ... You know I struggle to put into words how I feel yet when I write poetry its to total opposite ... I am eclectic what can I say LOL ... Love to you both and congratulations again I am chuffed that this is in spotlight ... Jayne x Look forward to hearing from you soon

Dear Jess,

I am very pleased that you like the poem. I think it is important to do things which are not the norm, not going to be approved necessarily but add to the freedom of spirit. Trust you to jump in quickly with a reassuring approval. Thank you. Brian

Brian,

in-fucking-credible poem. Yeah, that powerhungry idiot fucked up big time. Hope they have no other family members who still mess with politics. One thing: the title. It is an eye catcher, but I think it can also put people off. "Perverse ambition" might make a better title, please reconsider. Yours, ~Nina

Dear Nina,

I am particularly pleased with the phrasing of your laud. There is something refreshing when a woman feels free to speak so. You have been busy and I have noticed, but am so slow with chores and writing. But I will get to where I need to go, with the speed of regular mail. I am so glad you make suggestions. It is comfort of sorts. This time I will probably stick to the title, Fucking Freedom. I think shock appeal is good for titles. I think especially here. For my poem is not really about Mr. Bush. It is about freedom, and within oneself, permission. For all of Bush's foibles will not equal the self-censorship that each person submits to for his own constraining reasons, multiplied by us all, and the implications which spill onto the land. We must give ourselves permission to speak. And rather than persuade, I thought I would do. For each of us has a mandate and obligation to provide ourselves with the permission to speak of ourselves, our peoples and our world. If we don't, we risk a bain of boring poetry, failure to know ourselves well, knowing each other not at all and offering encouragement to those who will act predominantly upon uninformed self-interest. So each of us has an opportunity to fuck freedom, or not, and I think we should know it. We tend not to think of ourselves as influential in world, national, even municipal affairs. But we are wrong. I am always pleased to converse with you, Nina. Brian

Dear Richard,

I wondered, in particular, how you would react to this poem. Thank you for your gracious compliment. It was a comfort to see it posted. I think of you as a very patriotic person, in the best meanings of that word. Which I imagine to mean that you feel your heart pull not always in the direction of your head. Brian

The scary thing is that we as a nation (unless the ballots were MISCOUNTED) voted for him. Enmasse we gave him the power. But it's good/not good, without 8 years of Dubya we wouldn't have Obama. Is that a good thing? Time will tell. At least the man walks his talk. Love the poem--i like pissed-off Brian perpetrating polished-poems. Brian, you ain't seen nothing yet

We went from a man with guts and a little brain to a man with no brains and no gut, well, I shouldn't say no brain, he has one, just warped. As for the poem, a lot I disagree with, but Dang it was a fine read. Push that envelope man! Great job. Just for the guts to post it is 5 star material, but I am giving it 5 because it is plain good man. Any poem that can make me want to kick the writer's backside deserves it unless it is stupid. Dear fleur,

Thank you for your endorsement. I still have to write about my country's politicians, as I am Canadian, although we think of ourselves, somewhat begrudgingly, as cousins to our southern neighbours. I am afraid our Prime Minister, a man named Harper, is a sneaky and smart conservative whose natural inclinations are held in check because the electorate does not trust him enough to truly give him power (he has been elected to a minority government more than once - which means he can only govern with the consent of the parties who oppose him). But I don't see readers lining up so quickly to check the entrails of Canada's weaker parts. Again, thank you for your warm words. Brian

Finally some one with sense!!

Now that's heading the nail on the head!!! that wasn't his presidency but his father's. Controlled by his father's go between shit mouth Cheney. you see his father had sold weapons for the oil rights back in the early 70's to Iraq. By the late 70's to early 80's Iraq reigned on the deal and said fuck you to Bush senior. I know because I did security for them in the 70's. absolutey amazing

I love the title by the way. I was in the U.S. the first time Bush was elected, and I was astonished. When he was reelected, I was completely flabbergasted. I always believed he was his father's patsy... this said it so perfectly: "He was tired of trying for Daddy’s salutes after hitching his wagon to Cheney’s bloated moon beam." but I had a completely visceral reaction to "He was lost, lost, lost in the magnitude of his brokenness, in the suction of perverse ambition, in colonies of swelling corpses." You hit the nail on the head. Excellent.

Dear Wayne,

This poem was one of my efforts to be courageous in writing poetry. Poor George has been stuck in hollow a long time. That is tragic circumstance on a personal basis, and simply too tragic when one comes to high office without the goal and means of improving the lives of the nation's and world's population. I see he is making some amends, attaching his name to the effort to rasise money for Haite relief. He could do much more if he chose to support Obama's health initiative and reversed his position on Global Climate Change. Thank you for reading my poem and commenting. Brian
