Spirit in the Water

To witness a loved one suffering

unable to handle the struggle no more;

knowing you have to let her go

after seeing her collapse on the floor.

“Oh Jesus”, you say over and over

as you lay your head on your knee

Her pain, your pain; unbearable

you have to set her free.

Now when I walk the passage of home

her spirit follows me to the end

I close my eyes to the sight,

to shut out the memory of a friend.

At times it’s much too painful

but sometimes I welcome the memory

Cuddles, my cat of sixteen years

my home was her sanctuary.

A stray, was she, just one year old

roving the streets hungry and alone

I embraced her, loved and fed her

before, she was just skin and bone.

Her ghost wanders the floor of my house

in my bed she lays by my side

When darkness fills my surroundings

even then, I still can’t hide.

I see her spirit in the water

a puddle, a pond, even the sea

My fingers create ripples of reflections

there she is – right there with me.

Outside once more into the light

reflecting on the images in the puddles

I want to see her, `don’t want to see her`?

I just miss her, my beautiful Cuddles.

Of all my pets, she was my soul mate...loved by all...even my friends who hated cats. It's almost like she was someone I knew in another lifetime...do you know what I mean? Rosina xena465

You would have love her too

She didn't have a bad bone in her body...afraid of nothing and no one. She always went to everyone, individually, to sit on their knee. I had a big party once and a few little ones, I have just a one-apartment flat, and she was flirting amongst all of us, craving attention. Normally a pet would hide, not her, she loved it. She was special. Rosina xena465

The hurt!!!

I can't express in full...I love and miss all my pets that are now gone, still she was the special one...I had to have her put to sleep in 1997...a horrible experience I'll never forget. Even though I've had to do the same with other pets...also horrible, but not like her passing...she knew, and cried all the way to the vet. I was so traumatised I tried to kill myself!!! Sorry to say that, but you know me, never one to keep a secret. Rosina xena465

Sorry about your brother Shirley

My sister died six years ago, she was like me, a pet lover, not a people person. She died alone, undiscovered for nearly two days with her two cats lying beside her on her bed, Charlee and Zara stayed by her side. I took them into my home and looked after them alongside my own cat, Kuddles. That's when I had three lovely cats at the one time. It was the best thing ever coming home to three little faces all waiting at the door for me. And in the morning, they all followed me into the kitchen wanting their breakfast. They, all three of them, slept beside me in a single bed!!! Can you imagine that? Rosina xena465

Dear Indi

Yes you're so right, and not just cats! We all have a story to share, our own or how someone you know would say "As soon as I saw him/her, I knew they were the one". Then suddenly they're sitting on your lap looking into your eyes saying, "Thank you"...in there own little animal way. Thanks a lot Indi for lovely comment. Rosina xena465

Thanks for lovely comment. I did think I saw her image in a puddle of water once as it rippled with high winds that day, that's where the title came from, plus with her name being Cuddles, puddles rhymed with her name...strange!!! Rosina xena465

Goodness

What a caring heart you must have had for that cat. Casting an opinion of critique I say that you effectively expressed your love for your Cuddles tenfold that of your typical everyday owner in this poem. On a personal note I can say that from this writing alone, I can tell she was lucky to have a caring owner/friend like you. Look forward to reading more of your writings. Carch

I love rhymes it sounds like

I love rhymes it sounds like music to my ears.It is the first time that I read other poetry we all have kind soul. The World need people like us.People from all over the world we as poets have one thing in common, humbleness.I am inspired to write more if I read some of the poetry on the website. I agree S

Reading others poetry helps us with our own too. As you know, poetry is an art and it's not easy to write. But for some of us it's a gift that we all wish to share. And we have different styles, but at the end of the day, it's great therapy for the poet and the reader. Cheers Sirbestian. Rosina xena465

Oh those Huggles of Cuddles:)

Rosalina Sorry I am late to this one and it pretty near brought me a tear. I know how you feel about Cuddles. I sit here and look at Magic and know the day will come when he too will pass over the Rainbow Bridge with all his relatives in Pet Heaven. I can hardly think of that day as our pets give us unconditional love that not even a human can give us. He follows me everywhere I go, he knows of my moods, and my concerns as he looks up to me with those eyes. If only those eyes and mouth could speak besides a bark when I come and go, I guess that is him speaking to me. Dog talk like Cat talk, no one will ever know unless they have held a precious pet in their arms when they are puppies or kittens and be with them through their short time on earth with us. I know how you must of ached and still do for Cuddles, don't worry she is there with you. Purring you and keeping you warm. Just a lovely poem here, very sensitive and loving.
