A Sweet Reply

With eyes that mask an easy lie
of thin and nimble care
Her lips turn in a sweet reply.

Hands unravel and with a sigh
she hits her mark, does stare
with eyes that mask an easy lie.

He turns to meet as if to fly
away but holds her there;
her lips turn in a sweet reply.

His timid voice a question why
the truth she'll hide and dare,
with eyes that mask an easy lie,

not search for many ways to tie
the falsehood with the bare;
her lips turn in a sweet reply.

Until a dying breath and cry
secrets hold fast and fair
with eyes that mask an easy lie
her lips turn in a sweet reply.

Well with such a title, I better well have a sweet reply. JK I like what you did here Lisa, never great to watch the lie behind the eyes and then listen to the platitude. I thought your flow was great and that your repetion fit well. Great competion this will make! Julie D.D.

For some reason the rhyme and meter of this poem reminds me of the Great Poet Edgar Allan Poe. Am I wrong?--Club Special

How nice of you to drop by.

I'll take your word for it but would love a specific reference, as I have not read enough of Poe to find it similar. Nonetheless, I can take a compliment, especially one as grand as 'reminds me of the Great Poet Edgar Allan Poe.' (Just wanted to see that again in writing. It is so cool!) Thank you, Lisa

Dear Judy,

Thank you for visiting my poem and leaving your comment. I appreciate it. I had not thought of 'between the eyes and lips - a chasm of meaning.' Thanks for that. Lisa

I really liked

I really liked. In fact I like it better than my submission. You used the forced duality of the required repetition to great effect. BRAVO!

A Sweet Reply, indeed!

CLeM, Thanks you for the read and comment. It means a lot coming from you. This was a challenging exercise. Your own submissions were quite helpful. Thanks, Lisa
