To Die,To Lose
I think I understand
the great defeat-
A moment staring blankly
at the sky.
A rattle from the lungs
and to the cheek.
The bones so stiff
but light like lullabies.
Oh, but the synapses fire still.
Remember the lines we drew
as children in the sand?
And the bridges we crossed
over mud that made our feet like clay?
I think I understand-
That lost in all the years
is black and white
so we live in shades that swirl
between the two-
A familiar and ungodly, troubled hue.
To be a bitter soul and live in doubt
To wipe away, not winnow,
all this sand.
I breath my last and
then become the land.
