Behind the Mask We Wear
Behind the mask I wear
You are unaware
That I also carry a sword and shield
To defend myself from those who yield
My armor is very sturdy
Built up throughout my lifetime
This protection is my lifeline
Remove it and I’m exposed and vulnerable
As I present myself to you now
My armor has been removed
But only temporarily
It is being upgraded and repaired
My sword sharpened for those who threaten
Smile you
Read the rest of the poem Show less
Dont let them see what you’ve been through
But do!
Those whose armor is the same as mine
I’m comfortable with
We know what it’s like
To carry it everyday
My goal is to remove it
Someday entirely around those who are different
Let them admire
Take in and understand
Maybe differences can help me
It’s been hard to see that
I’ve been scared of them
Maybe they’ll proclaim, “Ew who is that”
It’s gone better than I thought
I still need work warming up
It’s cold out here
But I’m ready to get back in the war
I have my army of soldiers
We stand side by side
They understand me and have helped
Into the battle we ride

About Me
I can write poems on anything fairly easy but I love to share the mental health journey I have been on throughout my life and love to help people relate and feel better if they may be going through the same things. I love nature so I included some of that in my work but not everything is perfect so I had to be realistic and add some of the grime that exists in the world today.
I am working on my BA in Allied health. I like to journal and write poems as a hobby. When I was in High School I wrote an Ode to my home town and they published it in the county newspaper. It was a special moment for me as I love sharing my work. I have always gotten good grades in English and on papers. It has been my favorite subject.
My book does not currently have illustrations but I would love to draw some myself. My book is also not yet titled, but I shall come to a decision too. I have enjoyed poetry writing and doing it in my free time. It is a release of feelings and my way of expression. The current stage of my life has been grim so the general subject of my poems are mental health related but as I continue I am ready to move on to happier times and show a progression of feelings throughout my poetry.
