The Cat Commands

The cat commands, my favourite chair,
it preens and purrs a regal prayer,
with sleekened smile and tiger eyes,
the moggy yawns and owns my prize,
its whiskers poised, his cunning stare.

My tabby takes, with brazen flair,
his puma paw, his noble air.
A tyrant’s stare of stately guise
the cat commands.

Cat’s comfort claimed, I do not dare,
remove him from his restful lair.
The throne he claims, I should despise,
cat’s crafty ways, I lionise,
absurd. Yet still, he doesn’t care.
The cat commands.

About This Poem

Last Few Words: This Rondeau was the first one I wrote, and I’ve been working on it for the past two months. The Rondeau is known for its strict format, and while I sometimes prefer to bend the rules (as I did with The Socks I’ve Lost), this poem adheres closely to the traditional structure. I’m really pleased with this, I hope you are too. My husband said it was good, which is quite something from a man who doesn't read poetry and my daughter in law said she loved it. You can tell I do as well. :)

I am pleased that you have

I am pleased that you have completed your Rondeau! It is very good, as everyone has said. I'm not sure if I want to try one, it seems to be very difficult. But I have been challenged, and although I don't like to work on a project for as long as you seem able to, I will take my time and try one soon. I think you have met the challenge very well, and look forward to you and Rula's
critique on mine. Well done, well done! ~ Geez.

Thanks Geezer, it did take a

Thanks Geezer, it did take a long time and a lot of changing but I think it was worth the effort.
Heck it must be if my husband said he enjoyed it.

The most famous Rondeau I'm aware if is In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. Well worth a read.
I can't wait to read your Rondeau. I think you underestimate yourself, you usually do a great job and a challenge, that gives you something to strive for.

Thanks for reading and commenting, Ruby xxx :)

I went...

I went and looked up the "In Flanders Field" rondeau and finally recognized it as something that was required reading for an Honor's English class. We had to write a short paper on our impression of the mood and how it was conveyed. Anyway, I enjoyed your rondeau and maybe I will attempt one myself. ~ Geez.

Hi Geezer, In Flanders Field

Hi Geezer, In Flanders Field is such a heart felt poem. The subject is brittle but the poem is incredibly well written. Can you remember what your impression of it was? I also remember reading it when I was at school but I can't remember what I thought at the time.
I can't wait to read your Rondeau. I really do like this format.

I'm not sure...

if my recollections are from the first time I read it, or from now, but I kind of think that it might have been that those left alive, are charged with carrying on with the business of the war, not forgetting what they are fighting for. ~ Geez.

The Cat Commands

Well done, Ruby! I've looked into this just a bit, and it looks like you've done a fantastic job with an extremely difficult form. I am so impressed with your commitment to this, and very happy for you. You are an inspiration! I had heard of, and read, In Flanders Fields somewhere in my past. It seems very familiar. I may give this a try soon, as the poet in me longs to do. I also like your theme and the tender humor regarding the crafty cat.
Again, well done!
Thank you!

Hi Lavender, thank you for

Hi Lavender, thank you for reading and commenting. It is a shame I don't have a cat anymore, I would love one if I could have another one. There's something so appealing with cats, every word I wrote brings that warm cosy feeling you get with a cat. Ruby xxx :)

An enjoyable read

indeed dear Ruby. I was surprised that I haven't any in my poetry's bank though I have attempted most of the structured forms.
I'm inspired to write one and hope to end before the Resurrection Day.
Your prayers
Thanks for sharing this well written enjoyable, read.

Hi Rula, thank you for

Hi Rula, thank you for reading and commenting. It is a structured form I've really enjoyed. It makes you work hard for the reward but I think it is worth it. I like it for its strict format. I need clear guidelines ha ha.

Congratulations...

...Ruby Lord. I hope the satisfaction you feel after applying yourself so intently is as filling as my own after reading your fine rondeau. The feline demeanour is fully described that if someone never heard of a cat, they would certainly understand them.
Your vocabulary is perfectly fitting and ties completely with the ambiance of the mood.
I especially enjoyed the layers created by the superficial descriptions. Only cats are cats!
Be proud of this one.

Cheers!

Hi Thomas, wow, I don't know

Hi Thomas, wow, I don't know what to say apart from thank you for reading and commenting.

I didn't so much enjoy writing this one as I kept changing words and rhymes. But I enjoyed toying with it as if I was using my cats paw to push it about and nudge it into shape.

I am proud of this one especially as I remember the cats I have stroked, cuddled and loved. Ruby xxx :)
