The Crimson Craving
Morning mist like silk upon the air,
reaching out for you, but no longer there.
Search every room to my despair,
then at the window I solemnly stare.
Your contour, my mind will trace,
the blank expression etched upon your face.
Chasing the ghost of every taste,
locked in a silent, cold embrace.
Sifting through dust and strip it bare,
to find the scent that you forever wear.
Finding you hiding beneath the stair,
You are mine and I will not share.
Tear you open in frenzied might,
crimson red with every bite.
To taste your body my delight,
to mask the insanity of this night.
The sweetness fades, the room is tight,
sitting alone in ghostly white.
No shadow stirs to set it right,
beneath the cold and creeping night.
Gosh I really love Red Frog Lollies!

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
The poem employs a gothic, almost vampiric tone throughout the majority of its lines, using classic motifs of longing, absence, and obsession. The imagery is atmospheric: “morning mist like silk,” “blank expression etched,” and “locked in a silent, cold embrace” all contribute to a sense of haunted yearning. The poem’s structure—four-line stanzas with consistent rhyme—creates a sense of order that contrasts with the speaker’s apparent emotional turmoil.
The language is intentionally ambiguous, allowing the reader to assume a human subject for the craving, which is subverted in the final line. This twist relies on the reader’s expectations, and the abrupt shift to a mundane, humorous revelation (“Gosh I really love Red Frog Lollies!”) reframes the preceding intensity as melodramatic overindulgence in a confection.
The effectiveness of the poem hinges on this tonal reversal. The preceding lines are earnest and almost melodramatic, which sets up the final line’s humor. However, the poem’s success as satire or parody depends on the reader’s familiarity with both gothic tropes and the referenced candy. The rhyme and meter are mostly consistent, though some lines are more forced than others (“to mask the insanity of this night” is less metrically smooth).
There is a risk that the poem’s emotional buildup feels overwrought or clichéd without the final twist, and the punchline may not land for all readers, especially those unfamiliar with Red Frog Lollies. The poem could benefit from subtle hints earlier in the text to foreshadow the twist, which might enhance the humor and prevent the ending from feeling disconnected from the preceding tone.
Overall, the poem demonstrates an understanding of gothic conventions and uses structure to build suspense, but the effectiveness of the final reveal is contingent on the reader’s cultural context and appetite for tonal shifts. Consider refining the balance between earnestness and parody, and possibly integrating more playful or ambiguous clues throughout to strengthen the cohesion between the poem’s body and its conclusion.
