The Day The Poetry Died
Not that long ago
I can still remember how poetry
Used to make me smile
And I hoped if I had the chance
I could pen that pure romance
And maybe I'd feel better for awhile
But January made me shiver
With every headline they'd deliver
His instant retribution
Endangered constitution
I remember how I cried
When our country's Anthem was decried
Something killed me deep inside
The day the poetry died
Do you hear the people's plea
From Palestine, along the sea
Up toward the soil of Ukraine?
And do you believe that human aid
To southern Africa, now delayed
Is morally unethical and insane?
I know that those on Medicaid
Suffer, and now feel afraid
Federal jobs, depleted
DEI, deleted
Our neighbors of the south and north
Engage a trade war now, henceforth
And Mother Nature - cast aside
The day the poetry died
Bye, bye my American pride
Our president's actions are ruthless and snide
And the billionaire who laughs at us is unjustified
The day the poetry died.
About This Poem

Dearest Lavender,
I was shocked at the election results, I walked around dazed! Could there really be a majority of brain-dead voters in our homeland? Our way of life, our very state of being is now threatened...by this horror of a person. (It is my secret joy in knowing he shits his pants! i know, I am being bad)
Thank you for posting this, you let me know that there are others... not alone

Hello, Cat,
These are dark times, not only in our country, but the havoc he is causing around the world. Unbelievable that this is happening.
Thank you for reading and commenting, much love returned to you!

Hi Lavender
Although I usually am discriminate about rewrites of popular songs, I am partial to the vocabulary you used in this one...and if it helps you get through it, I, as a worldly man (born in Canada), have no less disdain for donny diaper and no less distrust in the country he has become king over than I have in the country as a whole. Part and parcel, a wretched lot.

Hello, Thomas,
Yes, it's adapted from Don McLean's "American Pie" (I should have noted that in the last few words, and will edit it now), because nothing, including poetry, seems pure and alive to me anymore. Thus far, we are living a nightmare. I am questioning everything about my country and government at this time. Trying to hold on to the spirit and hope in the 75,000+ who did not vote for him, and continue to have faith in the goodness of humans as a whole.
Thank you, as always, for reading and your comments,
L

Hi Lavender, I know this is
Hi Lavender, I know this is hard for everyone. We see it across the world. You are not alone in the fear of what might be. I was sickened last Friday when I watched that debacle.
At least we have seen the adult backing down, because he knows what it means if he doesn't.
Your poetry is a form of escape and a way of bringing us all together. Hold on and hold out.
Age will find a way of delivering us from this evil.
Take care, Ruby xx

Hello, Ruby,
A horde of white supremacists bullied up on Zelenskyy. What shameful arrogance. I feel something very empty inside now, disbelieving. Trying very hard to practice and have faith in love over fear.
Thank you for reading and sharing.

beyond exceptional.
This was truly beautiful. I haven't spent much time on neopoet as of the last six months and this was one of the first poems ive read since being back and commenting under peoples poems and this is just a spectacular start.
The repetition of "the day the poetry died" was just so impactful, it was said during perfect moments and It just exuded so much emotion. Your poem as a whole exuded just so much emotion, it explained all sorts of problems and issues and passed a sense of dread onto me. You should be incredibly proud of yourself, this is beyond anything my words could possibly do justice.

Hello, Zuella,
While I appreciate your generous comments, I have to make known that this is an adaptation of Don McLean's "American Pie," and much is simply borrowed to describe my frustration and strong sadness about the state of my country right now. But you are correct, there is a sense of dread.
Thank you for your kind support,
