Go Free and Easy; Gandalf
With loving hands you were always held,
deeply loved, most of your desires tended
my soul Companion and best of friends,
now comes the time I must physically let go...
I release you from the restrictions of leash,
on shaking knees, I bend to unlatch your tether,
Lick my hand and one last look into your telling eyes
go now, to the land where I may not yet follow...
Feel the warm breeze in your beautiful fur,
sniffing intently, you will catch the scent
of many pleasures to be acquired at your leisure,
prick up your ears as so many sounds come to you...
My darlin' big boy, you'll be with me and I with you
in my thoughts and precious memories, in my dreams.
One day we will reunite, and I will hear your voice
So go, free and easy, my dearest of Gandalf's...
About This Poem
Last Few Words: Mike was owned by Gandalf the Maine Coon Cat. In his passing he left behind an emotionally stunned Mike, his housemate and best friend... He will be greatly missed for he was one of a kind and can not be replaced. Mike, though hit hard, did his best for Gandalf, In every phase of his life. Always unselfish, Mike lovingly said goodbye to Gandalf the cat, yesterday. Greater gift of love hath no man... goodbye Gandalf...

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet's computer artificial intelligence:
Consider clarifying the emotional progression and imagery within the poem to enhance its impact. The transition from companionship to release is clear, but certain phrases could benefit from more precise language. For example, "most of your desires tended" is somewhat vague; specifying particular moments or desires might strengthen the reader's connection to the subject. Additionally, the line "prick up your ears as so many sounds come to you" could be more vivid if you provided concrete examples of these sounds. The reference to Gandalf in the title and final line is intriguing but remains ambiguous in relation to the poem's content; consider clarifying or expanding upon this reference to ensure it resonates clearly with the reader. Lastly, the poem's rhythm and line breaks could be refined to better support the emotional tone and pacing, particularly in the second stanza, where the emotional weight of letting go could be emphasized through shorter, more deliberate lines.

Hi Cat, your poem speaks with honesty and love and sometimes that's the point. I hope your friend has lots of support, he clearly has yours. It's hard to let go of our pets when they are truly loved. Ruby xx

Dear Ruby,
Mike and Gandalf were hand-in-paw for seventeen years and the love and affection were tight and strong. Mike is a software engineer who works with Steven. We have shared photos of our cats and other events over the years some joyful and others, sad. We are dearly fond of Him and Gandalf. that gorgeous cat! Both Steven and I ache for what Mike is going through now...
thank you for reading and responding. much love, Cat

Dear Candle
That is absolutely sad. I thought you did here a fair job as your tribute shines with love.
I had once or twice a canary bird that decided to open the cage and fly away. I never got another one as it really broke my heart.
I really understand your emotions
Thank you for sharing dear.

Hello Sweet Rula,
at one time, I raised baby cockatiels. hand-fed them and loved each and every one of them. I know how fetching and sweet they can be. I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for your comment.

Oh Geez,
I am very sorry for causing you pain...when I wrote this yesterday, I was remembering the losses of my furry family members....the first time I went through it, I was a basket case after. The vet allowed both Steven and I the examining-room. We cradled Gonzo, while he was administered the drug. I stroked his nose, cause that was what he liked and he would only let me do it. When his spirit left him, it was like being dropped from a great height. Only then did I allow tears, and my Dam broke!
thank you for your understanding comment! much love. your, Cat

The pain...
is worth the memories. I held my Rugby's head in my lap and asked him if he was ready to go get a burger. I bawled like a baby, as I felt him go. Thank you for the tribute to your friend and his cat, it really does make a difference, knowing that others understand. Nice job. ~ Geez.

Dearest Geezer,
I think the pain we feel is the price we pay for love... The purity of that love is a miracle...it is only right that we be there to radiate that love to surround them when they pass...
Big Hugs to you and your memories of Rugby may they also make you smile for he would want that!
much love and healing, Cat

Oof! This one hit hard Cat.
Oof! This one hit hard Cat. As I've gotten older my appreciation and love for our furry friends has intensified. This, of course, makes losing them so much more difficult. The best quote I have EVER heard about grief came from a very unexpected place. It was dialog from a Marvel Comics streaming show by a character named The Vision. "What is grief but love perservering." Man, I wish I could have written that!

Cat,
This poem evoked many emotions. I had a beagle that was the best dog I've ever had. She was so patient with my daughter, who was three at the time. Her patience extended to a cat that we had. The cat liked to bite Missy's jowls. She would walk around with the cat hanging from her jowls, and never once snipped at the cat! She would play with the kitten, chasing each other up and down the hall. Man, I need to write a poem! Missy developed tumors on her side, and they were inoperable. We loved her until the tumors began to cause her pain. My ex-husband had her euthanized one day while I was at work without telling me first. I was furious with him for robbing me of the opportunity to say goodbye and let her go with my love surrounding her! Thank you for letting me remember! The poem, as always, is wonderful.

Dear Punky...
I would bet that your husband was probably trying to save you from having the pain of her passing. How terribly wrong he was... Maybe he does not understand the concept of "closure" I am so sorry you experienced this. I know exactly how you must (feel) felt being robbed of those precious last moments. I experienced the same, over a cat named junior. my family gave him to a new home and life, while I was at school. It took a long time for me to forgive them. I still feel echos of that pain when I think of him. thank you for telling me about Missy, and how much you loved her.
