Home and Country
Not so long, by and by
from off shores, far and wide
my dear ancestors came to be
in the heartland I call home, now
where Indigenous feet walked free.
Ships and steamers, lean and loud
filled with dreamers, poised and proud
crossed a hungry, untamed sea
toward a new land, with a strong vow
declaring their democracy!
On the soil, thick and red
humans suffered, scorned and bled
as the land once claimed to be
"The New World" they called home, now
as far as the eye could see.
In their conquest, wanting all
signed years later, the protocol
I stand in strange company
living blindly, knowing somehow
what once is conquered is never free.

Home and Country
Thought provoking write. T/hat second stanza beckons vivid imagery of ships pulling into New York Harbor, the statue of Liberty in the background offering hope to the hopeless, welcoming those with open arms and opportunity.
Well done.

Hello, Wally,
Lots of different thoughts going through my head about my country - its past, present, and future. I'm glad you could envision the harbor and what it meant, and still means, to the world.
Thank you so much!

Hi Lavender, this holds a lot
Hi Lavender, this holds a lot of weight and emotion and you've touched on the rawness of invasion and colonization to tell the truth of every country. We are all migrants making our way the best we can.
Sadly that fact always comes with battle and death.
Good job, Ruby xx
