I Wrote a Poem
I wrote a poem just for you the other day
But it acted shy like it didn’t want to be read
The letters even turned red as if blushing
Scampering away hiding under my bed
I tried to catch it but it ran away again
It scurried underneath my writing desk
I could hear it sigh taking a tiny breath
As if the verse created an earnest quest
I asked “what’s the matter little one?
I composed a prose so it can be recited”
And the poem peeked its tiny face
Shy and quiet but also quite delighted
“Don’t be shy and come out of there
Sit right next me and let’s rehearse”
So the poem sat at the edge of my desk
Feet dangling ready to perform the verse
“Mm” It started “ooh-” it added “-oon” it ended
“That’s right” I said praising the heartfelt striving
“Moon” I concluded, now let’s do the rest
And word for word, line by line it read thriving
After practicing the poem felt more poised
His confidence grew to a great extent
“I think you’re ready buddy” I said
It straightened its bow tie ready to present
But by then you had already fallen asleep
“Good Night Moon” it said kissing your head
And all night the poem rehearsed every word
Waiting there quietly sitting next to your bed

I love...
the thought behind this one. I never wrote a poem for my children or grandchildren, but it resonates with me, because I used to tell my niece and nephews bedtime stories that I made up. It also reminds me of the way I feel when I have posted a new poem, and the waiting for someone to discover it. I would make an effort to trim the longest lines and bring them into a consistent meter. Nice stuff. ~ Geez.

I Wrote a Poem
My granddaughter has been a source of inspiration to write her an entire book of poetry which I plan to do throughout the year along with sketches. It really is fun to let the imagination flow as if I were a kid again. I have a lot on my hands for the next six months but I figure by the time she learns to read (she's two at the moment), I'm sure she'll laugh at the silly rhymes.
Thank you for reading.
