A LETTER TO SANTA.
"What you doing Grandad?"
Danni's voice calls clear and shrill
"Writing a poem sweetheart,if I can only find my quill"
"What's a quill then Grandad?"
"It's an old name for a pen"
"Oh!"
(Pause as she thinks).
"Can I write a poem Grandad?"
"Of course you can my pet".
I hand her pen and paper
"Don't think I can start it yet,
Don't know what to write about
Ideas Can you help me get?”
I say, “A Christmas poem,
As it's nearly that time of year.
A plea to Father Christmas
Just make it short and clear
There, I leave it all to you now
Just write it as you feel”.
(Another pause).
“I'll ask him for nice presents,
but not a choice for me,
I'll ask for gifts for my sisters
And Mummy and Daddy don't you see?
If I don't mention any for myself
He'll think good things of me".
Aside I mutter,"Not to mention crafty".
So, nib scratches cross the paper
Till with contented smile
Poem complete she leaps to her feet
In a flash consigns it to fire.
“Must get it to him early
He gets so busy now,
I'm tired I think I’ll go to bed”.
So what was in her poem?
Her plea to Santa Clause,
I never had a chance to know
Hope there was something nice for me.
