At Solstice

The sun pauses
like it’s looking straight at me,
like even light knows
when to hesitate
before pretending everything is fine.

A deer at the edge of the trees
doesn’t posture.
Doesn’t explain.
Doesn’t soften itself
to be more acceptable.

It just stands there
fully itself,
which somehow feels
like an accusation.

Light stretches across the meadow,
touches leaves, stones,
whatever doesn’t flinch.
Warms what it finds
without asking
what I believe,
or whether I deserve it.

Nothing is explained.
Everything is offered.

The birds go on being birds.
No mission statement.
No optimization.
No brand strategy.

Just breath
and the audacity
to take up air.

The river keeps its promises
by moving on,
which sounds simple
until you try it
with grief,
with rage.

I am standing here
with empty hands
and I am done
calling that a failure.

I am listening,
not for answers,
but for the sound
of the world
continuing
without consulting me.

This isn’t a victory.
This isn’t surrender.
It’s a turning.

So I stay.
Not to understand.
To witness.

And I notice
how the day
lets go.

Neopoet AI [2025-04]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

This poem offers a contemplative exploration of presence, acceptance, and the quiet persistence of nature in contrast to human struggle. The imagery is vivid and grounded, with the sun, deer, birds, and river serving as potent symbols that embody natural rhythms and truths indifferent to human concerns.

The opening lines effectively set a tone of hesitation and introspection, using the sun’s “pause” as a metaphor for a moment of reckoning or stillness. The personification of light as something that “knows when to hesitate” introduces a nuanced tension between awareness and pretense. This tension is deepened by the deer’s unapologetic being, which the speaker perceives as an “accusation.” This is a compelling emotional pivot, suggesting feelings of vulnerability or self-judgment in the face of unvarnished authenticity.

The poem’s structure, with its short, deliberate lines and frequent enjambment, mirrors the contemplative pacing of the speaker’s thoughts. This pacing allows the reader to dwell on each image and idea, reinforcing the meditative quality.

The thematic contrast between nature’s unselfconscious existence and the speaker’s internal turmoil is well sustained. The birds’ “No mission statement / No optimization / No brand strategy” cleverly critiques human tendencies toward self-definition and control, while the river’s “promise” to move on introduces a poignant metaphor for resilience and the challenge of emotional release.

The closing stanzas shift toward acceptance without resolution, emphasizing witnessing over understanding. The final image of the day “letting go” resonates as a subtle but powerful metaphor for surrendering control and embracing impermanence.

Areas for further development might include exploring more varied or unexpected sensory details to deepen the immersion, or experimenting with more varied rhythm or line length to heighten emotional shifts. Additionally, while the poem’s tone is consistent, the speaker’s voice could be made more distinct through more specific or personal details that ground the universal themes in lived experience.

Overall, the poem succeeds in balancing philosophical reflection with emotional honesty, inviting readers to consider their own relationship to change, presence, and acceptance.

At Solstice

Hello

I think this is the first time to meet so hello and nice to read a new pen mate.

I like this one as it feels like it is effortlessly written. Don't get me wrong. I mean it reads like a free bird. I would like to read more of yours when possible. It's never a failure to watch the nature, it's always inspiring and this poem is the best proof.

Keep it up!

Thank you for sharing 🌷

At Solstice

Hello!

Both winter and summer solstice are mesmerizing events.  Nature moves on quietly and does its own thing, no matter what state of mind or body we are experiencing at the time - and we could learn so much from that example, much like your poem suggests.

So I stay.

Not to understand.

To witness.

Wise words and beautiful poetry...

Thank you,

Lavender
