Sonnet for a Northern Monkey

I woke to rain like pigeons scrapping in my bin,
the sort that wets your socks before you’re dressed.
Kettle clicks, the telly’s zoning in,
the toast goes black, it’s biscuits and we’re stressed.

The street’s half-lit, a wheely bin's been nicked,
some sod’s been tagging walls with “FUCK THE TORIES.”
Bus late, of course, and it smells of sick,
the driver grunts, swears, and sings his songs of glories.

A kid’s on loudspeaker, mouthing ‘bout his mum
her new bloke, a thief selling dodgy gear.
An old man lights a cig despite the “No,”
and nods at me like, yes, I am still here.

This town won’t shine, it’s chipped and full of scars,
but still, we walk it like we own the stars.

Hi Michael, thank you for

Hi Michael, thank you for reading and commenting. I was unsure if anyone outside of Manchester England would get this. To my shame, you proved you did. I shouldn't worry about our cultural differences. Ruby xx

I was ready...

to get the umbrella out for my walk to the bus. Sounds like someone got up late. Maybe overstayed out last night? A bit of a hangover? ~ Geez.

Hello Ruby

Loved the title (honestly I had to google it up then I read your last few words):)
The first line explained everything after that. Some few spots where I lost the connection, but it's ok.

I especially like the closing couplets and the flow all through.
Well done indeed!

Hi Rula, thank you for

Hi Rula, thank you for reading and commenting. I was a little concerned as it is very English so I thought maybe not everyone would understand it or appreciate it? It's a humorous look at ourselves which is what we do the best. Your comments as always are appreciated. Take care, Ruby xx
