Sonnet XVII - Pablo Neruda (Great Poetry Workshop)

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz
Or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off
I love you as certain dark things to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul

I love you as the plant that never blooms
But carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
Thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
Risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride
So I love you because I know no other way

Than this, where I does not exist, nor you,
So close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
So close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

Sonnet XVII

This is one of the many great poems that Pablo Neruda wrote this poem came to light in the movie "Patch Adams" its exquisitely written and it tells of a quiet dark love he writes so passionately that one cannot fail to be moved

This is one for my memories, that hold that rose for ever..
A beautiful meaningful piece to someone who is a secret..
Thank you for finding and loving this great Sonnet.
One thing I do regret about being older, there seems to be a shortage of time to read all those things that I have missed or to do all those things I would like to have done.
I wonder how many regrets we hold in each facet of our beings and the thoughts brought out by a write such as this one,
Take care young lady, I am content with nearly all the things I have left undone but that is another story and a secret LOL,
Yours as always Ian.T

Hi Jayne

No surprise your choice of author lol. Even in translation the intensity of love comes through. Would I be correct to assume this rhymes in original language? It feels like it might. BTW check typo line 13. Not being multilingual that about takes care of all I can contribute about this poem lol..............stan
