TALES NEVER TOLD
I see some yellow in the trees
proof that summer will end soon.
In just weeks puddles will freeze
and flocks of geese will sing their tune.
These thoughts come on an evening stroll
which taxes old legs to their limit
so I take a break on a slight knoll
and find a stump on which to sit.
I wipe the sweat from near bald head
using a red rag I tote for this.
The moisture turns it deeper red.
A cool wind makes the pine trees hiss.
Nothing has resumed moving yet
save a buzzard gliding way up high.
He'll find a meal 'fore long I bet.
I sit thinking as time passes by.
My thoughts are of sixty eight years
lived from west to the east coast
All the good times, all the tears.
Some thoughts bring shame, some cause to boast.
And each day had its own tale
few of which have been forgotten
from toddling to full grown and hale.
Days which won't be lived again.
Days passed outnumber those to come
and do so by a wide margin.
Ere long I'll reach my final sum
and complete the race no one can win.
Then like all of those now gone
every story I have within
will blink out like the setting sun
never to be told again.

TALES NEVER TOLD
Hi, Stan,
Autumn brings out the introspective memories, for certain. This is soft and subtle. Somewhere in one of your older poems, I remember commenting that it felt as if I was walking along side, watching your poetry unfold. That is the way this piece feels. Both the actual actions, and the internal thoughts are vivid, yet quiet and reflective. Lovely.
Thank you!

Yep...
I guess that is one reason that I don't particularly care for Autumn; it brings thoughts of slowing and a general dying off.
The air becomes brisk and chill and these old bones just don't take to it as well as they used to. But you bring vivid color to mind and rest easy on that old stump, while you reminisce, so I guess I'll walk along with you too. Nice job of bringing the scene to my head and heart. ~ Geez.

Yeah ya'll up north dislike autumn because of the cold which it eventually brings with the long winter. While we southern people see spring as a harbinger of the stifling long summer. Summer has broken here and it is becoming more bearable. I reckon you'll get snow before long. So we'll just sit around and enjoy whatever weather is coming and wait for a favorite season to come around again

dear Stan,
Autumn is my favorite season and I really don't care for winter, now that I am physically unable to play in the ice and snow. but I do love sitting with the soft glow and warmth of my fireplace with curtains open watching the snow fall. I'll admit that Autumn suits my dark side and brings my muse to inspire. I hope you are well. I love your pensive moods.
*hugs, Cat

Dear Bro
You are making me yearn for Autumn/Winter I love those months of the year. This summer has been warmer than the last couple of years and I can't wait to see the leaves turn.
This is beautifully done.
Bravo!

Hi sis
It's been both warm and cold here and winter is still holding on although we've had not one flake of snow. But spring here and autumn there aren't far away
