A Wednesday’s Prayer

I saw a small American flag
with a tattered corner
fixed to a wooden stick.
It had collected in a storm drain
on the side of the freeway
next to a crumpled weathered pack
of Marlboro cigarettes.
This is the most American thing
I’ve ever seen.

A Wednesday's Prayer

Hello, Tim,

First - how WONDERFUL to see you!  You have been greatly missed.  I am very happy to read your amazing work again.

I love this style for you. Observational, then very introspective.  The imagery is almost like a painting - still and thought-provoking.  The entire poem makes such a statement, raw and direct.

Really like this from you.  I'd love to know more about the title, as I'm sure it is significant and adds even more depth to the poem.

Again, so good to see you!

Lx

Coming back to this - it feels as if it's a couple days after a weekend event.  Perhaps a parade or holiday.  I'm very curious.  Thank you!
