Whispering Her Name

There he was…

Laying on the cool grass looking up at the sky
Longing to be in her sweet arms once again
Wishing he could hold her close just one more time
Dreaming of a moment that would never end

He rests on the ground as clouds surround him
Thinking of the day he met that beautiful girl
They were so young when they fell deeply in love
Remembering how he promised her the world

He pauses, breathing slowly with a sad smile
Knowing he assured her he would come back home
His heart still beats for her, regardless of pain
Holding her letters, he doesn’t feel alone

There he was…

With the memory of open wide spaces
He built that house for her there on the prairie
The way she looked at him in that pink sundress
The dream of the girl he wanted to marry

There he was…

On the pasture holding on tightly to hope
Recalling her smile when they rode horses
The surreal sound of her voice calling to him
The tears she cried when he joined the armed forces

There…

As he lays there amidst the chaos and death
A young man recollects on the love that fate sealed
Whispering her name with his very last breath
A wounded soldier dies on the battlefield

I really enjoyed this poem. Didn't expect the ending but boy that did hit home for me.  I am a veteran.  A soldier dying with the thoughts of his love on the battlefield -boy can I relate. Well written, poignant and beautiful.

Getting a little teary. Thanks for such a great piece you shared.

Whispering Her Name

Thank you for your comment and for your service Rita.

It's difficult to tell what our young men and women go through especially when they're far away and many have come to an end, what they must feel, think. I was trying write this with a civil war era in mind, but I guess it happens across the span of all wars and time.

Whispering Her Name

You expressed this experience in a very beautiful way. It shifted well between their life together and his death. In my understanding of how the universe operates, I believe that this isn't the end!

Whispering Her Name

At the end of this life, when we finally make peace with ourselves and the world, I'd like to think that the ones we love the most are there for us.

Thank you for reading and commenting.

Whispering Her Name

Hello, Wallyroo,

The endearing final moments of this soldier's life.  Heartbreaking, and yet there is something soothing to the reader to know that he has these thoughts to hold and comfort him in this moment.

Thank you,

L

Whispering her Name

Thank you Lavender.

Yes, I think it's the most endearing things that we can be comforted by, our spouses, our children, our parents, before we cross the bridge to the other side.
