Sad, the Pumpkinman

His face has a familiarity
in ways that can't be explained
both dark and light
salvation and terror
so strange...
so wonderful

His smile holds me with warmth
It oozes from his white robe
that covers the abyss within
where I fall forever
when I fail him

He knows something about me
I need to serve him
or the truth will be shown
to my whole world

eternal

Till snow all melts and dies,
while weeping willow cries.
I’ll sleep until the spring,
where soaring skylarks sing.

When seasons turn once more,
and sea, sunset and shore
recall to memory
her blonde hair flapping free.

She was my summer love,
when there were gods above,
and she would always wait
to meet, by kissing gate,

till darkness it was gone
and light, it lit upon
our souls, down by the stream,
where love was all we’d dream.

Gentle Gale

I can hear birds taking to the air,
and people talking without care.
But I can no longer hear your voice.

I’m left to imagine the breeze as your heartbeat.
I've no idea where the wind ceases its journey,
but if I reach this place, maybe I'll find you there.

Back Foot Defensive

He’d been a county cricketer,
journeyman all-rounder.
An appealing appearance,
clothing always cut
to a perfect line and length,
except for that affair
when his wife was possessed
with a pair of garden shears.
Always on his guard,
back foot defensive -
I had to find out about him
in his case-notes and Wisden.
He was treated each pre-season
with a course of ECT,
a means of punishing himself
for the times he got caught out
and those occasions since
he’d edged between the slips.

Thoughts

I suppose trees
sleep each night
after holding their faces
toward the sun and their
arms so high all day

They might bow their heavy heads
let their long limbs dangle
then brush the earth
with their elegant fingertips

I can imagine the soft inhale
their exhale as they cleanse
the air around them with a sigh
dreaming of clouds coming and going
and clusters of mushrooms at their feet

I suppose they are wise that way

Alchemy

5 years old playing, living, just being.
Someone speaks.
The child gathers some mud to cover part of his smile but it doesn’t last
Someone else just points from afar.
He carefully shapes clay to cover his mouth, at first.
Someone shouts
More clay to his eyes from curious to calm, attentive
someone comments,
someone shuns,
someone pulls away
His clay mask is complete, unassuming, void emotions.
His teens come but now it is a clay suit of armor, nothing can get in, or out.
