A Wednesday’s Prayer
I saw a small American flag
with a tattered corner
fixed to a wooden stick.
It had collected in a storm drain
on the side of the freeway
next to a crumpled weathered pack
of Marlboro cigarettes.
This is the most American thing
I’ve ever seen.
